CRES Reviewing State of Emergency Enforcement

BANGKOK: -- The Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situations is evaluating the security situation to determine whether and when the state of emergency should be lifted.

Spokesperson to the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation, or CRES, Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd, said the Center is evaluating and compiling situation reports to determine whether the state of emergency should be maintained. The decision is expected to be announced in two days.

He added that the CRES has assigned the deputy secretary-general of the National Security Council to look into the possibility of relaxing the state of emergency enforcement, to pave the way for upcoming by-elections in Bangkok.

The Electoral Commission previously sent notification to the CRES, expressing its concern that the enforcement of security law might obstruct by-election campaigns.

Colonel Sansern noted that the explosion of a gas tank in front of the head office of the Bhumjaithai Party yesterday might affect the CRES's decision on whether to lift the emergency decree.

Regarding the bombing incident, a fruit vendor who was found injured at the scene admitted that he was hired to carry out a bomb attack there, but the gas cylinder, which was set to be detonated by a remote controller exploded prematurely, before the bomb was wheeled to the party headquarters.

The CRES spokesman also revealed that there continues to be reports of movements of red-shirt supporters and local political groups who they believe could stir up violence.

DSI Could Be Target of Terrorist Attack

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Special Investigation has beefed up security after the bombing at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.

Chief of the Department of Special Investigation or DSI, Tharit Pengdit, has revealed that the department has stepped up its security to the highest level, at least for the next three to four weeks, to prevent any potential terrorist attacks.

The move comes in the wake of yesterday's explosion near the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.

Meanwhile, the investigation team is currently collecting evidence regarding the attempted bombing of the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters.

If it's discovered that the attack was part of the anti-government movement, the case file will be immediately transferred to the DSI. The local police force is currently coordinating the investigation with the DSI.

The bomber, who was injured by his own explosive device, has confessed that he was hired by a person in Chonburi Province to transport the fruit cart to the headquarters, but the TNT bomb detonated prematurely.

The investigation team indicated that the person has been identified and is now trying to flee the country. The police are currently tracking down the suspect.

At the same time, Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat, who is also the deputy leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, said the Party will wait for the the motive behind the attack to be determined by investigators.

The deputy interior minister pointed out that security has been increased at the party's headquarters, and it is the police's responsibility to provide security for the party's leaders.

Local authorities are providing relief for flood-stricken residents in Muang Paan District of Lampang Province.

At least 300 homes in five villages have been damaged by flash floods, which flowed down from a mountain, flushing mud and logs into communities below. Access to some of the villages was made impossible.

Deputy PM Keeps Mum on Motive behind Bombing at Bum Jai Thai

BANGKOK: -- The public security body cites the bomb attack at the Bhum Jai Thai party would not carry much weight in the decision on the extension of the emergency law.

The deputy prime minister meanwhile declines to comment if the crime was politically linked.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thaugsuban said the metropolitan police have already assigned officers to investigate yesterday's bombing at the Bhum Jai Thai Party headquarters.

Suthep said he does not want to comment about the possible motive behind the attack until the investigation can be finalized.

He revealed that the number of important venues with needs of heightened security has caused difficulties for the city police.

The deputy prime minister also declined to comment if the incident at the Bhum Jai Thai Party will lead to an extension of the emergency decree and added that some recent crimes might not be linked to politics.

However, he expressed his belief that there are still some groups aiming to stir chaos for political gains.

Secretary-General of the National Security Council Thawil Pliansri said the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situations has already been updated about the bomb attack at the Bhum Jai Thai Party. He went on to confirm that the crime was politically motivated.

Thawil said his organization will instruct public agencies to be more aware of their security.

He said that, although the incident would be weighed into the CRES's consideration of the extension of the emergency decree, it would not be the deciding factor.

Thaiwil also denied the crime was a ploy by authorities to keep the emergency rule in place, saying they have others things to do rather than come up with bogus attacks.

He also said the people involved in the attempt to create chaos is being driven by a perception that they have been treated unfairly, so there must be campaigns to raise their awareness about the proper methods to call for justice.

Thailand coordinates with Malaysia on border drug suppression

SONGKHLA (TNA) -- Thailand’s committee working on drug suppression in the southern border provinces on Tuesday said it is now coordinating with Malaysian officials to tighten measures against land and sea transport of illicit drugs.

Maj-Gen Preecha Plaiyuwong, chief of the committee working on drug suppression in the South, reported that Thai authorities arrested three members of a major syndicate belonging to drug kingpin Usman Salaemang in the southern region.

During the past three months, drug suppression officials seized 224,000 methamphetamine pills, six kilograms of crystal methamphetamine ‘ice,’ 32,600 bottles of an illegal cough syrup concoction and 202 kilograms of cannabis. Assets worth Bt100 million (some US$3 million) were also confiscated.

Dr Porntip Rojanasunan, committee member and director of Central Institute of Forensic Science, said the regional insurgencies are related to the drug rings and the human trafficking syndicates. She believed that the regional unrest and crimes will not subside if the authorities cannot cut the insurgents’ financial supports through illegal means.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj-Gen Putthichat Ekkachan, commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau Region 4, said that police are monitoring the movement of drug dealers who transported cannabis, in particular the route from the Northeast to the South before delivering the narcotics to customers in the neighbouring country of Malaysia.

As Malaysian authorities successfully eliminated drug trafficking and seized about one thousand kilograms of cannabis a year, the Thai committee therefore is coordinating with its officials to join efforts to suppress the land and sea shipment of drugs. (TNA)

Court upholds verdict for 'magical' fraudster 'Nain Ae'

The Appeals Court Wednesday upheld the lower court's verdict jailing occultist Harn "Nain Ae" Raksajit for 100 years in combined prison terms for public fraud and sexual assault.

However, due to the statute of limitations, Harn will actually be serving just 20 years behind bars.

From April 1999 to July 2005, Harn made women believe that he possessed magical powers and could make them become more attractive. The man ended up making a total of Bt910,000 for improving the "charm" of 33 gullible women, the lawsuit said.

The lower court sentenced Harn to 25 four-year terms for raping or sexually assaulting 25 women, who he had lured to his bed to make them "more attractive". However, under the statute of limitations, he will be serving only 20 years. He has also been ordered to pay compensation to the 25 victims.
