Deputy PM: Government Considers Extending State of Emergency

The deputy prime minister in charge of national security has said the government is considering extending the State of Emergency and has admitted that some red-shirt leaders have already fled the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister in Charge of National Security, Suthep Thaugsuban, said the government is not formally opted to replace the Emergency Decree with the Internal Security Act.

Suthep pointed out that provincial governments could decide for themselves if the Emergency Decree is still deemed necessary in their respective areas.

However, the deputy prime minister believes the State of Emergency should not yet be revoked in the Capital, as he has received intelligence reports that there are plans of additional illegal anti-government activities.

Suthep also said that the ongoing investigation by the Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situations or CRES of suspicious financial transactions has been able to put a dent in the illegal anti-government movement coffer.

The deputy prime minister has also admitted that some red-shirt leaders including Arisman Pongruangrong, a terrorist suspect, has already fled to a neighboring country.

However, Suthep refrained from pointing out which country exactly, citing that it could affect international relations.

When asked about the remark made by former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa that it will be very difficult to bring about national reconciliation, Suthep responded by saying that it is expected that there will be some opposition to the government's plan, and he reaffirmed that the prime minister is sincere about ending the country's political rift.

Regarding criticisms of the government's approval of more than 600 million baht to push forward national reform and the reconciliation process, the deputy prime minister said the government would spend even more if it could truly benefit the country.

Nong Khai Prosecutor Commits Suicide

A prosecutor in Nong Khai shot and killed himself while playing fatal Russian roulette in front of his lover following a quarrel with her about their relationship.

Investigators from Muang Nong Khai police station examined a Honda Civic car with Udon Thani license plate parked in the parking lot of Udom Place apartment in Muang district after they received a report that a man was shot dead in the car.

Police found the body of 37-year-old Apichart Pladkhwa, a prosecutor of Nong Khai Public Prosecutors Office, who was hit in his right temple by a bullet from a .357-caliber revolver. The man was on the driver's seat and the gun was on his lap.

Apichart's girlfriend Auamporn Wongwirapan said before the incident, Apichart and her had a meal together and returned to the apartment.

They then had a quarrel as she wanted to break up her relationship with him as he is married and has children.

Auamporn further said Apichart then held the gun against his head and trigger it but the bullet chamber was empty. He then pulled the trigger again and the gun fired this time.

Police said they believed it was a suicide as there was no sign of fighting in the car.

Police, however, said security cameras nearby will be checked and more witnesses will be questioned in further investigation.
