I have a majority share in a landscaping company which I invested in a few years ago to the tune of £600 and a lot of graft. Things realised so well I got hooked and now have left my academic attatchment with Thailand behind.

At the moment we are doing very nicely. So nicely that I have ditched my dream of teaching in Thailand for the time being.

Now that my part of London has got the games I have had 3 calls already tonight asking for York stone patios to be laid (3 days work at about £1K profit per day as opposed to 400£ at the mo) and it looks like things are going to get better and better.

I am torn between doing what I want to do deep down (teaching in Thailand has been a dream of mine for a long time - I've worked there before but always wanted teach!) and maybe hanging on and making a killing over the next 6 years but missing the last of my younger years in Thailand.

I can hear you saying 'stay on, stay on' but I am so p1ssed off with the UK its unreal, and things are so busy I can't even visit until November at the earliest!

Would you <deleted> it all off and follow your heart or stick it out for the financial benefits?

That stuff gives me a headache. I don't understand a word! Its all abut avoiding the truth if you ask me!

I'm here for some plain talk from the north (or south) of England, not Tibet. (or Aus or any other nations we infested for that matter)

I've had good advice from friends, albeit cyber freinds, on here before, buts its held me in good stead and I'm not too proud to hear what they have to say again.

Do you do the work yourself....? or do you have a "gang" to do the work... if the latter, then give one of them a bit extra... he can be the gaffer ... you can bugger off and still rake in the money... :D ... if you don't have a "gang"... maybe get one..? :o

totster :D

I do have a gang totser but my jobs I design, lay and finish.

Taking nothing from them, they are 5 years from being the finished article. Oldest one is only 21. Hes had 6 months with me and hes a strong as buggery and not to bad but hes dense but getting it slowly. I'm making XXX a week from them just turning up so far, and we get the job done. They are honest, English and good, so I also feel a responsibility to train them up as much as I can.

I can leave them to it for a morning but no longer!

Not too sound too much like Swiss Tony for me turning a dive of an urban garden into a paradise is abit of a mission.

I apologise JD :D  :D  if i sounded abrupt!

I appreciate that your advice was well meaning and many thanks. :D

Accepted Prof. :o

I thought that by posting this in Bedlam, you were searching for some more esoteric responses, rather than practical advice.

I'm afraid I can't help as I am not from England, but I wish you luck with your decision.

Well I just want to know what 'the lads' would do.

Its 4.30am and apart from playing on TV, I've had 4 invoices to write, and 3 designs to finish, and no beer to help me through this glorious day for London.

Follow your heart.

How many people on their death bed say that they wished they spent more time making money?

I really do think it is past your bed time... :o

With the property market slowing, people will want to spend more doing up their existing properties, rather than take the risk of trading up.

Conservatories, Patios, a Diarmuid whatsisname-style garden, fish ponds.

Its been a national obsession in UK, ever since Capability Brown and morning television programming.

I dont know for sure, but I bet the landscaping business is slower during winter months - correct? If so, just take an extended holiday for 6 months in Thailand - teaching if you like. Then come back to UK and make money during the better part of the year.

If my premises are somehow wrong, then maybe just do another year, try to spend as little as possible and save everything you can, then get the ###### out for two years, and if you haven't found happiness by then, go back and make lots more money in your landscaping business.

Then you can buy some land in the Home Counties, do it up to look like Hua Hin and invite a few Thai families to live and work there, putting up little noodle stalls and making Som Tam. Settle down there, and if it works out, you can quit the landscaping business and instead introduce your plot of land as a Thailand theme park for people who are scared of flying.

Follow your heart.

I gotta agree.

If you can afford to do the things that you want to do, why bother doing anything else.

I left a high paid job 12 months ago to retire early in Thailand. best decision that I ever made. You have the added bonus of a desire to teach, so you don't even need to retire.

Snag is that I can't really retire nor take a winter off yet.

Winter seems to be the season of the conservatory as Summer is the season of the patio and barbeque.

I'm not complaining but its become year round work and the thought of leaving such a cash cow even to a deputy sort of grates me.

On the other hand when I'm knee deep in <deleted> wacking away with a mattock at a bit of concrete like soil, the visions of a classroom full of students and a nice gaff in Thailand where the neighbours haven't woken me up at 5 am with their slanging match seems so welcoming............

If I were you mate I would return to England, do the work, save the cash and come to LOS each year for a holiday if possible.

England is bearable, the prospect of returning is worse than returning itself and if you have good friends here then anything is bearable.

Couldn't agree more with the Skampi. Rake it in while you can. Teaching will always be available, but sources of good income are very hard to come by.

(Need a partner?)

go with your heart man.. Opportunities come and go, but this life can be lived only once.

It's a no brainer.

Things will work out for you no matter what.
