Because BBC iPlayer and ITVplayer are not accessible from outside the UK?

Well it works ok for me in Pattaya

That's exciting news! How are you accessing it?

I've just tried to view iPlayer and got this message (as I've been getting ever since iPlayer started) some years ago:

"Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only, but all BBC iPlayer Radio programmes are available to you."

Have you not been getting this messsage or have you found some way round it? I'm very interested to know!

I have heard of people using proxies with UK IP addresses to access iPlayer, but also that the Beeb are onto this and have managed to stop them.

However, TOT has returned to "normal" for me this morning and as The Box etc are up and running again I don't need iPlayer now. Having said that, if I could access it I'd prefer it to torrenting!

If you prefer please PM me with details of how you access it? You could make an old man very happy!

cheers

I got a free 3 day trial of a UK proxy some months ago and it worked fine for the BBC iPlayer. I used Firefox and installed FoxyProxy who then gave me the free trial. Not sure if this will still happen or if BBC are on to them.

This had to happen. It probably a good thing. You'll "hopefully" see performance of voip, web mail, etc.. improve. Torrents are drain especially since most peers exists outside of TOT, if you look at an average torrent drainer using a steady 1mbit the economics just dont make sense. I cant even buy full transit routes on 1000mbit commits for < 550baht/mbit (or anywhere near that). So hopefully TOT stop, separate, or traffic shape them.

Ideally I'd like to see torrent drainer pay a massive premium. Part ignorance for most windoze users as the systray hides the little U, but wow imagine how fast the internet would be in Thailand without torrent drainers.

Ends rant.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think you are very much in the minority

Absolutely. Why do I pay top price for 10Mb? Not just for accessing emails.

Maybe I've got it wrong but I thought bandwidth was only paid by the uploader. At least that is the case with my server in the USA. I only pay for outgoing bandwidth never incoming.

I'm on tot in Koh Phangan and downloading a movie from the piratebay @ a speed of 275.3 kB/s

so still pretty normal for here

I just placed a call to TOT & spoke to a woman who didn't seem to understand torrenting, downloading movies etc. She placed me on hold, so in the meantime I fired up uTorrent & within a very few seconds my download from TheBox started d/l normally. I'm in Bangkok, snd the problem seemes to have gone away, for the time being at least.

you're probably using DHT so that makes it a public torrent which most people said has never been a problem. Problem relates to private trackers.

yes, but many private trackers won't allow VPN...

Private trackers don't give a hoot about your client connecting to the tracker through a VPN or a proxy. They care about you browsing the website using them. You're confusing the tracker with the website. The two things are not the same.

Sorry but this is not true at all. I once had an account with thebox closed down for doing exactly what you are suggesting they don't give a hoot about.

I can access thebox this morning again by the way but the speed is rubbish - definitely being throttled.

Wrong! - also relates to public torrents (at least here in the CM area) - where torrents are off/on every few hours. Too, normal internet browsing appears to be grotesquely slow in periods.

Last "normal" traffic was around 7:30 - 9am this morning - since then things have been VERY erratic.

Cheers

I just phoned and said you are limiting my bandwidth for downloading torrents. But again noone had any idea what I was talking about she asked me to run > tracert bla bla which I did and emailed to her and after all that she still didn't know what the problem was and I got the infamous we will call you back. I havn't been anywhere over 20kbs all day, I just dont see the point of a 4mbps connection if I cant torrent coz I can check my email and browse the web on dial up.

I must say in the evening between around 20.00 and 2300 it is almost impossible to surf the net.

during the other hours no problem at all

i'm on koh phangan

I want to test if tot is blocking torrent here as wel is demonoid a private tracker?

I'm about 25 kms outside of CM using a 4mb/512kb TOT connection (not my choice, there is no other option here). All trackers seem to be OK now (have demonoid and thebox ones running at the moment) but download speed is between 100-140 kB/s. Before all this started that would have been 400-440 kB/s. Personally I don't mind all that much if 100 kB/s is all they can manage but I do object to paying for 512 kB/s and getting only a quarter/fifth of that speed.

So I assume you were browsing the site with your ISP's IP and routing your client to the tracker through a VPN? I'd be interested to hear how you were doing this.

Here in Sisaket, all my trackers are now good, but speeds, woeful. Started a new download 20 mins ago. Per utorrent average dl speed 1.1kB/s ul 0.0kB/s. This with 19 seeds and 17 peers! Should be banging.

Ran seed test with Thaivisa: against Singapore: ping 1345ms dl 366kbps ul 99kbps. Against Bangkok: ping 1214 dl 335kbps ul 98kbps.

Ran another with speedtest.net against Phnum Penh ping 198ms dl 3.33Mb/s ul 0.24 Mb/s. Seems to be a big discrepancy somewhere.

Hadn't reset my modem since last night so tried that, no difference. This is what I get for living in the stix I suppose!! So wish I had the choice to give these clowns the flick as many of you have, but here we don't. TOT own us!!!

Private trackers still dead on Phuket - at least for me

Have you tried first to open a seed of a file you already have from the private tracker you are trying?

TheBox torrents from a few days ago and new ones, utorrent shows the tracker as not connected :(

I can't understand in this day and age why ANYONE would want to use Torrents. There are much better/safer ways to DL than them.

So thick. No food here.

Not thick at all, just can't see the point of Torrents as they are slow and can easily be traced.Just get on a secure SSL usenet server and download at FULL speed then job done.NO P2P filesharing involved!!!

Why is usenet newer (in this day and age [sic]) or safer? Torrents can actually be quicker too depending on the location of the seeders as it allows for parallel downloading of packets. SSL only encrypts the content during its travels between the server and the client - not much benefit on downloading binaries (other than illegal porn I suppose!). Torrent sites are also free (and many virus check too) whereas usenet servers pretty much all charge - especially for popular/content rich ones.

This thread is about Torrents being blocked, which to me means you can't get what you want via Bit Torrents. All I offered in my original post was a way to continue getting your shows and in my opinion a faster and better way of getting them.

As far as SSL is concerened here people who have DL'd a music or Movie via Torrents HAVE been prosecuted due to the owner knowing what file has been downloaded, whereas with SSL they can tell how much you have downloaded but not the content.

It's horses for courses but since using Usenet I personally have never used BT's since

Try turning off the modem for an extended period as TheBox and TheEmpire have restarted, both new & old, in the Gulf.

So, folks, any good news here for Bangkokians? Any expectations?

Im planning my visit to TRUE office on Monday for a switch. It is not 1st TOT's issue for me during last 6 years I am with their so-called "service". Even I am their premier customer and pay their "company's" rates...Enough is enough.

But they still have their time to fix it til Monday, yeah. Just one chance of a million that they will have it done in time, but there still a chance. :)

No, I wasn't using a VPN, I was browsing the site with my ISP's IP and using uTorrent for the downloads, set to use Tor / Privoxy to resolve the hostnames of trackers.

The ISP was BuddyBroadband and this must have been about 3 years ago. All my torrents went red and they refused to admit they were blocking tracker connections even after I pointed out the fact that there were a dozen different trackers all unable to connect, at the same time, and yet when I used a proxy they all went green. In the end I moved to True as I got fed up of their lies but not before I had my old account closed down by thebox.
