Given that we have to earn the right to be a member of Bedlam (although writing 500 “me toos” is hardly paying your dues), it is a closed forum and therefore can be described as a privilege. It is certainly a privilege compared to members who have yet to achieve the magic 500.

With this privilege, as with all privileges, must come an element of responsibility. Now this is a word not often used in this forum, and not wishing to have huge discussion on a definition, sensible members ought to be able to see that the minimum responsibility of a closed forum must be – not to talk about non-members behind their backs.

If we can agree on this – then I would respectfully suggest the mods ought to have a method of dispensing “instant Karma” to those who abuse this privilege.

Therefore I propose – if technically possible – the mods be given the power to exclude members, who abuse this privilege, for periods of time.

So if I mention someone who doesn't have access to bedlam then I can be banned? Given how some people react to my posts I'm sure that someday I'll mention someone who doesn't have access to bedlam and someone will whine about how I'm talking about someone behind someone's back. I think its a bad idea. What's wrong with talking about people behind their back? You can always do it in a PM if you want. Whats to keep someone from telling the person what we've been saying anyway? Want to bet that the personage who has been discussed and is the impetus for this suggested rule already know what has been posted? I think talking behind somebody's back and then deleting the post should not happen...then there would be a reason for people to use reason.

I think that Bedlam members should be subject to some of the general forums rules....

while it is a partially closed forum and the moderation is limited....posts that are insulting in a vindictive, hurtful or abusive manner should be disallowed.....the thread could be deleted and the offending member warned.

Disrespecting others should not be allowed anywhere.....

I dont mean the good natured sledging type posts that we generally all recognise as tongue in cheek...

The question is about abuse of privilege - not about the casual mention of someone in a posting. The thread that stimulated this posting was far from casual.

Given how some people react to my posts I'm sure that someday I'll mention someone who doesn't have access to bedlam and someone will whine about how I'm talking about someone behind someone's back.  I think its a bad idea.  What's wrong with talking about people behind their back?

Depends on how much you value gossip I suppose - I've always considered it more a function of knitting groups and washer women - but I suppose I am rather old fashioned.

You can always do it in a PM if you want.

The point is this has been public gossiping for an exclusive group that excludes the participation of the person being discussed for no other reason than she has not yet posted 500 replies. If you think that is behaving honourably, then  honi soit qui mal y pense.

Whats to keep someone from telling the person what we've been saying anyway?

and you believe this will help the accused feel better and more able to confront her accusers, or will just ease the conscience of one of the spineless ones?

Want to bet that the personage who has been discussed and is the impetus for this suggested rule already know what has been posted?

Oh, she knows - but how this can be reasoned as a justification, bemuses me.

I think talking behind somebody's back and then deleting the post should not happen...then there would be a reason for people to use reason.

That makes sense - I think?

I'm just new to bedlam so don't really know yet what's it all about but don't really care one way or another. It's not nice to gossip about others behind their back but then again in real life it's the same and I wouldn't be bothered about it.

If a thread has people talking about someone and the people doing this know that their comments will not be deleted then this is a reason for them to use their reasoning ability before posting negative things....since someday soon the person being talked about may have access to the comments. I guess it is a bit obtuse.

What does, "honi soit qui mal y pense," mean?

You asked if I thought gossiping behind someones back is honorable. I don't think that honorable posting should be enforced by the moderators. I think the people who post here can maintain a certain level of honor by peer pressure. If some topic is dishonorable then honorable posters should immediately jump and point out the offense and if enough posters do this then things can be brought around to a better way. I don't like the idea that if someone does something dishonorable that the first thing to do is to go to the higher authority, pull rank, call the cops. This is what people do when they don't want to take on the responsibility themselves.

Perhaps the best way to handle this is to threaten to copy and paste the dishonorable post over on the general forum....is this against TV rules...could I go to the offending thread and copy/paste it to the other side?...just wondering.

Peer group pressure was applied in this case and it didnt work until very late in the piece.....that is why the mods should step in.....dont forget that people make these type of posts knowing that they can do so without face to face confrontation...keyboard heroes ... :o

Maybe the honor guards should have moved in sooner and enmass with a clearer message as to the unaccepatability of the thread. I think the tide turned when it became clear that eventually the subject would see the posts...that's why I thought that the threat of copy/pasting the post to the other side would have been really effective....do you know is doing that against the rules?

face to face confrontation...keyboard heroes ...

The matter was discussed openly, very openly, - and in good humour - with the lady in question in 'General Topics'.

Anyway, the agenda behind this Poll is nothing to do with Board civility or transparency, its merely about trying to get people banned.

Reith, I believe Moogie means this..

I'm happy to abide by any new rules.

I would like this initiative to be named in honour of its inventor.....

"The Thomas Merton Courtesy Campaign"

With perhaps a separate etiquette sub-Forum within Bedlam bearing this title.

Sorry for the double posting, that just cracked me up. Can we get TM badges if we sign up to the courtesy campaign The Moog?

Not badges, but a hologram of Thomas' handsome grinning face will be on the new Thaivisa Card, so, if you move the card to and fro, he appears.

I think the spirit of bedlam is such that it "police's" itself...

You only have to look at "that" thread to see that the members dealt with it, the only moderator help that was needed was the "closing" .... good call IMO

totster :o

As far as the OP: I voted Instant Karma, but perhaps I should have read tm's post first... What was on my mind when voting was the fact that one of us replayed a private conversation to the young disney deer that she was not actually privvy to.

The fact that it was about her is not actually relevant. That OUR thread got out of hand, well, that is for us to moderate ourselves, but what is the (now i get angry) WHAT IS THE <deleted> POINT of having a private forum, if the threads are just going to copied&pasted to general users???

The person(s) responsable for THAT should be dealt instant karma.

imo.

:o

kayo

can I use my karma to run over your dogma??.. :o ... had to get that sick joke out of the way.

I would like to pose the question - If the "talking behind someones back' thread had not been about a woman , would such a furore have been created?

Thai Visa produces alot of macho posturing and moral outrage - but the internet is a vehicle for free speech. people can jump right in without actually reading and understanding what is going on , but , up to them. And up to me if I decide to give a <deleted>.

how many flame wars ( real wars ) have been started over mis-understandings?

minimal moderation in theory is too much - though it seems we need it , but there is no need to go overboard.

Bag me behind my back , infront of my back , wherever you like - see if I care. If I had some respect for your thoughts , then I might consider them.

and bambi - I will be quite happy to say hello to you at the sin club if I am still in town on the 29th.

So, you think that the purpose of Bedlam is to have a place to post things that you don't want the general public to know? I'm not flaming here I'm just interested in peoples ideas about what Bedlam's purpose is and how it should be run.

I think the most important thing about Bedlam is that the flaming is kept to a minimum because the blatant flamers never get access...they get dumped before they reach 500.

Maybe the honor guards should have moved in sooner and enmass with a clearer message as to the unaccepatability of the thread.

Agree completely.

OK, I'll fess up.

I copied the entire thread and emailed it to BambinA and I don't care what anybody says about me for doing it.

I did it because it was the right thing to do. (even if it is against some rule!!!)

Good for you... I would have probably done the same... and I'm thinking that maybe you weren't the only one anyway... :o

Seconded. :o

I missed all the action over the weekend because I was offline... and I was surprised and a little disappointed to read some of this cr@p this morning. :D

Speaking of cr@p... so is this poll/thread. :D

Null votes from me.

And... good on you TizMe. :D

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

Speaking of cr@p... so is this poll/thread.
Thomas would defend this 'Courtesy' Poll, except he is busy on the Cathouse topic insulting newer members.

For example:

I bet you describe your 10 years crawling from cheapskate hour to cheapskate hour in Pattaya as "high powered stress filled business executive working in the Far East".
Does he clean your bum for you as well?
you havn't got much else in your life, have you?

A class act !

I'd hardly class Udon as a "newer member".. :o

Forgot the "off" - switch have we?

You're not sexually attracted to me, are you?

Forgot the "off" - switch have we?
Monday morning is 'Merton morning'. Its the only thing that gets me through the weekend alcohol-free.
You're not sexually attracted to me, are you?

I think this belongs in the new Gay sub-section of Bedlam - 'Gaybed'
