In the age of Obama, the phrase

GAY IS THE NEW BLACK though not new, is catching on and for many has more meaning now. After all, a black man as leader of the free world is a big deal, whether you like his politics or not, and has meaning to people all over the world. Obama's rise to power represents a level global gays can only dream about now (Iceland's lesbian PM notwithstanding).

In the US it is nothing new to compare the seemingly never ending fight for gay equality to the black racial civil rights movement. In particular, the fight for marriage equality is being directly compared with the winning battle against the previous bans on interracial marriages.

Phrases have their day, they are a fashion in a sense. People my age still remember when gay rights pioneer Franklin Kameny's coined phrase GAY IS GOOD was considered revolutionary.

(It probably still would be seen that way in Iran, Jamaica, Sudan, etc.)

For these times, does GAY IS THE NEW BLACK work for you?
