Yesterday I've seen in Thong Sala (Koh Phangan), 2 young Thai guys bringing each a Tookay hanging from a stick and a rope.

I don't know if there is any connection with the above.

dam_n, I had a big one 10 in. long a while back on my porch. My girl was terrified of it so I trapped it in a bucket then let it go outside the garden. 10,000 Baht! :annoyed:

10K Baht should ensure that the Tokays end up as an endangered species!

Shame, they are beautiful, if a tad irascible. :(

Perhaps the Japs think they have aphrodisic qualities!

From what I know, Chinese and Koreans use the tokay skin in remedies against erectile disfunctions. There are tokay-farms in Thailand and a farmed tokay sells for around 35 baht, the last I heard. I can't imagine a 'wild' one costing 10,000. Isn't this story a clever (albeit nasty) plot of someone trying to rid his area of tokays?

Against erectile disfunctions? 10,000 Baht. Blimey, cheaper to nip down the local pharmacy and buy Viagra!!!!!!!!!!

One big tokay could maybe be used for making a large quantity of potions 'helping' many many 'small' men ? Not that I would know. Tried a tokay once and didn't fit...

A number of Issan residents have told me that in their youth, the large tokay was a very common sight, but with the introduction of a market for the animals (China, Japan, Taiwan), villagers would capture them to sell and now their numbers are greatly reduced.

Had a quick look on the internet seems that they think they could hold a cure for AIDS.

This ↑↑↑................... our Thai maid and husband are out everynight with a long stick with a lassoo string end trying to catch 'The Big One'.

They were told the buyers are using them as an alternative to expensive and toxic Aids treatments.

No but it is possible that in a short while someone shows up who has several gecko's for sale and want to sell them at 9000 Baht. Many thai people will buy them as they can make an easy 1000 baht profit by selling them to the guy at the market...................who at that time will have mysteriously disappeared.

it is........they are now everywhere on the hunt in the after noon and at the night. Came accross my house too. Minimum weight is 300 gr = 2'000 Baht

Send them to my house, have 2 or 3 big ones. One inside, they can jump & hiss the little buggers.

Had one inside the house the other day that had drowned in a bucket of water. I guess about 8000 Baht worth. :crying:

You mean 8000 Baht included the weight of water he swallowed?

:cheesy: Yes, but sad for the Tokay.

Where animal welfare and conservation is concerned Chinese medicine has a lot to answer for.

Agreed. Last time I was in China, I was appalled to see tiger's penises and rhino horn for sale. Made me sick... Just cos the chinese can't get it up!

this just pisses me off. As if the islands dont have enough ecological issues, first monitor lizards, now tokays, and all for the benefit of a chinese fellow with a limp dick.

My sister in law is currently offering 30.000 baht for larger and healthy ones.

Seems they are used for medicinal purposes like aids, cancer, etc...

As long as someone thinks it works then the price will get higher an higher until there are no more geckos left. Sad thing, but money is for most people much more important then conserving nature.
