N-VA Senator Kim Geybels (N-VA) should resign after being involved in Thailand in a drug story.

N-VA (Political Party in Belgium - LP) Senator Kim Geybels was forced to resign from her party yesterday afternoon . She became involved in a drug deal last weekend in the Thai capital Bangkok.

She stayed there with former N-VA employee Bas Luyten, with whom she has a relationship.

Luyten would have been looking for drugs in Bangkok and took a bunch of dealers back to their hotel room.

There, a transaction would have taken place.

Shortly thereafter, that is the version that Geybels confessed to her Party N-VA, the dealers contacted them again.

They claimed they had hide a big amount of drugs in the room and threatened to notify the Thai police if the couple didn't pay a stiff sum of money and the two went on with the blackmail.

Panicked, Geybels called her Party in the morning, asking for the details of the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok to learn.

The Embassy intervened and put the two on the first plane to Paris.

It is unclear whether the Thai police were informed and/or involved. According to the N-VA no complaint filed and Geybels was not arrested.

After her arrival in Belgium she was immediately summoned (by the N-VA - LP).

In an interview with Senate President Danny Pieters (N-VA) she was made clear that she had to resign.

No choice

Being a Senator and Chairman of the Young N-VA, Geybels has a role-model.

In Thailand, getting involved in a drug and extortion story is impossible to reconcile with these. "We had no other choice".

The N-VA, yesterday, tried to play the matter as plain as possible.

In a short notice the party asked to treat the story with caution, "out of respect for the private life of the person involved".

Because VTM (news agency - LP) shortly after knew already of the story - and unwrapped the big news - totally undermined that plan.

Whether there will be consequences for Geybels' career as an emergency Physician-Doctor, was unclear last night.

Geybe would be followed in the Senate by Piet De Bruyn (N-VA), the current spokesman for the Flemish Minister of Budget Philippe Muyters (N-VA).

Back to my earlier question on a earlier thread. What is with all these people from Belgium making the headlines over dealings in Thailand, it seems the last few months almost a story a week about a Belgium citizen having problems. Must be there time of the year.

As far as I remember -I am Belgian- you need to be more than forty years old and having -at least- one degree to be a senator in Belgium.

But -hopefully- I didn't live in my country for the last twenty years.

the first article contains the story as told by Ms Geybels, the synopsis of it being that :

"she was framed together with Bas Luyten [her married lover, with whom she conducts a secret affair], by taxi drivers who were friends of Bas Luyten. The taxi drivers were invited to their room in the Hilton for Bas's b'day celebration and brought cake. The next day they went all to Pattaya to shop for clothes for the drivers' children but all shops were closed there. Return to Bangkok and smoked a Moroccan peace pipe in one of the drivers' room. The atmosphere changed and the couple wanted to leave and did, but the taxi drivers, some Hilton staff and some police were waiting at the hotel upon their return. The taxi drivers demanded money saying they had left a white powder in the couples' hotel room previously, the police advised them to pay, or else. So they paid to the police. The police had found a white powder in a small plastic bag in the room. Later Ms Geybels noticed also 200 euros missing from the room's safe and 1800 euros debited from a bankcard. The hotels staff had cut off the room's telephone line as a security measure. After two days of mortal fear they managed, via Ms Geybels' mother, to talk to the (Belgian) ambassador. He told them they were lucky. In Thailand blackmail is widespread and people who don't pay are often found dead in their rooms. The ambassador believed us immediately and escorted us to the airport in person."

We went to Pattaya but all the shops were closed there When I read this article I'm ashame that I'm a Belgian citizen.It must been decades ago that I've read so much crap in one article.

I hope this gets a tail in Belgian courthouse,but I guess it will be swept under the carpet very quickly.

One of the contradicted points in the article is the level of involvement of the embassy. "diplomatic sources say the couple couldn't pay their hotel bill and was helped with that." Ms Geybels talks of another kind of involvement, as quoted above.

1. I smiled too when I read that the shops in Pattaya were closed as there are many other details in the story by the esteemed Kim Geybels which seem very odd and unreal for Thailand.

Anyway, I think she's making up the story to "defend" her married lover which, in this case, is quite stupid of her. He will probably fly off (or did already I suppose) to New York where his wife works and lives.

2. I don't think it will have a tail in Belgium's courthouses since there's nothing criminal, done by her in Belgium nor Thailand (so far), other than that she had/has an affair with a married man.

And I think that's good since Belgium really doesn't need more problems right now ..do they ?

It seems she is very protective of her lover.

In May Bas Luyten was fired as staff of the president of the Flemish parliament because he could no longer perform his job due to severe drug addiction. She then hired him as personal assistant last week. Because he wasn't properly screened through agreed procedures, the party (NVA, one of the two main parties involved in trying to establish a government coalition) opposed this hiring, then forced her to resign. The man has been booted from the party, he used to be president of young NVA. His successor in that presidency was Ms Geybels who had to relinquish that post today as well.
