Noppadon: Montenegro not to extradite Thaksin

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Former Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama has confirmed that the Montenegrin Government will not extradite ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to the Thai authority.

Mr Noppadon, also Mr Thaksin’s legal advisor, believed Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, currently on a visit to Montenegro, must raise the extradition request in the discussion with his Montenegrin counterpart Milan Roćen. He quipped that it has always been Mr Kasit’s prime job to hunt down Mr Thaksin.

The ex-Minister cited a confirmation from the Montenegrin Government that it would not hand over Mr Thaksin to the Thai counterpart since Montenegro could not extradite its citizens according to the law. He added that Thailand and Montenegro also had no extradition treaty.

Mr Noppadon confirmed that Mr Thaksin remained in good health and then showed a photograph between Mr Thaksin with former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and his wife taken on 27 August 2010 as a proof.

The legal advisor said Mr Thaksin had been quiet because he did not want to stir up the political situation and hope for a true reconciliation; hence the Democrat-led government cannot use him as an excuse for failure to create reconciliation or solve problems.

Mr Noppadon continued that the deposed Prime Minister had been spending his time travelling to meet with leaders of many countries and seek business investment opportunities. He said Mr Thaksin might tweet or make phone-in talks to confirm his good health at some point.

Just like I predicted Thaksin will never be extradited from anywhere as its a clear complete political set up and no real government will fall for the trumped up charges that have been levied at Thaksin.

Now before you guys jump on me you all said he would be extradited as soon as the paperwork was completed for the terror charges and he would be picked up by Interpol LOL YEAH its really happened or are they still preparing the extradition documents for Interpol.

Obviously if the documents have been prepared and presented to Interpol they obviously dont think they are worth the paper they are written on, I also did a search on Interpol just in case and it turns up nothing on Mr Thaksin

I commend the guy for laying low so that no more trumped up charges can be laid against him when its clear the problem is more than just him.

It's the return of the cocky "we'll have our revenge" style postings that also followed the chaos caused by the reds in 2009.

So what tactics will they use in 2011 to attempt to secure his return? Given that taking out their own supporters and attempting to blame it on the army hasn't gone exactly to plan last time around, I dread to think what they'll try next...

Why is this "news"? Montenegro made it clear when the issuance of the passport became an open secret that the country would never extradite any passport holder. This is neither news nor affirmation of spurious predictions.

Why would the government want him back?

Having him here would only cause more trouble.

The only ones who want him back are the PTP and their diminishing band of supporters.

However if he doesnt keep feeding money into Montenegro they may decide he is too much trouble for them and chuvk him out.

But he still has plenty of other poor countries he can go to and mesmerise them with his money.

Cant understand why Nelson M would want to meet with Thaksin, he cant be looking for funding, or is he?

And in light of Montenegro selling citizenships for a 1/2 million euro, it opens itself up to having any number of previously-foreign-citizen fugitives guilty of crimes residing within its borders which will result in...

Also, according to Montenegrin laws, any extradition of a Montenegrin citizen to another country is prohibited.

Wow, that ought to put a nail in Montenegro's attempt to become any closer to Europe...

The Thai Govt does not want Thaksin back in this country ever. But it has to be seen to be trying. One man, a few million baht in travel expenses and protocol is seen to be done. But if he ever comes back there will be civil war and that is exactly the reason he will not be 'allowed' to return.

Additionally, it's a two-way street. Thaksin doesn't want to return to Thailand and face the potential for 30 years in prison.

This despite his vow to return in 2009 in order to lead the revolution in Thailand.

He's only willing to return if ALL cases against him are dismissed, which, thankfully, doesn't seem too probable.

Lots of safe heavens around the world, for the right price, but they are similar to the exercise yard in a prison compound. You can step out but you need to return to you place of refuge. Some of the reported business deals made by individuals, can prove to be a bummer, if you are caught on the wrong turf. There are a host of people who make bad enemies, when they feel wronged. The popular vote is probably not a consideration when pay back/up time rolls around.
