welsh1 Posted September 2, 2010 Share Posted September 2, 2010 (edited) You learn something new every day here in LOS fair play to them there is never a dull moment, after returning home last Saturday after we had been out for a lovely meal with the family I decide to go to the bedroom and was just relaxing in my room watching a movie with the misses .then we could hear the old lady who lives across the road who is a very good friend of the family come over .and the misses turned to me to say she will be back in 5 mins as the lady has come over to help them predict the lottery numbers which was due in the next few days and last year she won big money, So after a bout 30mins I went out to investigate to see what she was up to, and there they were The misses and the rest of her family and the old lady all looking at these different number trying to rearrange them into lucky numbers I suppose well that's what it looked like to me but what do I know I'm only a stupid farang I don't know shit, So I just grabbed a beer from the fridge and went outside for a smoke and when I was done I came back inside and they were still looking at these numbers <deleted>. Normally I have given up and I don't bother asking them any more as they only amaze me with the answers they give me to some of the things that they are doing, So without thinking, i said what you doing love she said picking lucky lottery numbers she said, then she said you want a go , so here I am saying yes when I know dam well this is one of them situation when I should have said no and just grabbed another beer and left them all to it, So the old lady takes my hand and then leads me out in to the garden closely followed by the family she then leads me to a tree in the corner of the garden and on this tree she as drawn a round circle which she as colored in all white chalk .she then gives me some joss sticks which I lit up then I give them to the old lady then she puts them in the ground in front of the tree, the g/f told me to look at the white circle so there I was watching this white circle, Then the old lady went through this Buddha chanting ritual for 10mins and then they all turned to me what numbers you see they say. For the life of me I could not see any numbers..Then we look again and again and whoa behold holy shit I think I can see some numbers, but it might be due to a little drizzle of rain as now washed upon the tree and made it look like numbers are there in the circle or maybe the fact that my eyes are hallucinating due to the fact I have been staring at this circle for 10 mins , or maybe it was just the fact that I so much wanted to be back inside where I knew a nice cold beer was waiting for me in the fridge so back inside we go and then they all discuss and rearrange the lucky numbers which the falang as just seen on the tree and hopefully they can turn them numbers into lots and lots of money on lottery day, I have seen many different ways in the way thais go about trying to bring good luck for them selves whether it is predicting their future or just a little win on the lottery but not seen it done like this before so it was a first for me, But a bit of warning to others who maybe might come across this situation in the future it is a complete waste of time and a waste of money and would have been far better to waste your time relaxing and drinking beer Edited September 2, 2010 by welsh1 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've said the same thing for years. Lottery tickets are just a tax on the poor and stupid. But, at least it is THEIR decision to donate their money. What I CAN'T understand is why gambling is illegal in Thailand, and yet lotteries are legal? Your odds of winning are far better with gambling at poker, roulette, black jack or horse and dog races. As the tax for the poor... I agree 50%, My best Thai male friend is quiet wealthy and he loves to play the lotto every weekend... Well he loves anything to do with gambles actually but also the lotto and 2 weeks ago he spent 8000 Bath on tickets and won around 100k. So last weekend we sitting at some street noodle shop and the ticket seller comes to us. He checks the number she has and and said he did not like her numbers this week and did not buy any. It just part of the Asian culture... But I wonder how the OP girl can chose her numbers, because usually you have to select from the numbers the lady selling has. It's a tax for the poor and the stupid. It's a 'game' (and an incidental tax) for those who can afford it. When you move into a new place they ask the address and then play the #s, When you buy a car they ask you the plate number and play the #s, When you are about to have a baby they ask the expected date and play the #s. Good answer, but now you are talking about something illegal... Illegal activities can not to be discussed on this forum, the rules are very strict. Just teasing, needed to have the last word, but anyway asians are very spiritual with the gambling and numbers. Once drunk my thai friend who gambles a lot explained to me that we farangs could not understand how they gamble and why they go casino. It seems they take it very personally if they win or lose as a sign of good karma or whatever. There is just something thats very different in culture. I cant remember all his explanations but he was trying to tell me why some asian people can bet all their money and property on stupid gambles only believing that spirits and numbers will make them win because of karma or something. When I finally checked there were indeed numbers on its back, but it was obvious they had been badly scratched on. This made me wonder did one of them do it to fool the others, or did the one who found them also scratch them on? Either way I think they are complete idiots with this number finding lunacy.
