Hi

when my GF was in the UK during the winter, she got the taste of Strongbow and i was thinking about taking a few cans across for her but unsure how much your allowed to take into thailand.

I was going buy a pack of 24, but not sure if i would be legal taking that amount of drink on Board a plane and taking it into thailand.

any advice on limits

I presume it is alcohol, no more than 1 litre can be imported duty free to Thailand. If you have more you need to declare it and pay import duties.

Why not teach her how to brew her own - Apple Juice is cheaply available and you only need bring a jar of brewer's yeast and your set.

Get hold of a 6 liter plastic water bottle (Nestle water bottle is fine).

Wash it out (or use it directly after you've poured out the last of the water it contained.

Pour in 5 liters of pure apple juice (available in cartons from most supermarkets - make sure it's 100% apple juice)

Add a pinch of yeast and cover the top with a piece of folded tissue - hold in place with an elastic band.

Leave in a cool place for about a week to ten days ( you'll get a fast fermentation to start with that will eventually slow to almost no bubbles floating up/

Try not to disturb during this first fermentation as you'll want the yeast to settle at the bottom of the bottle.

Now get four large plastic coke bottles, wash them out thoroughly and then add one table spoon full of sugar to each bottle.

Siphon the contents of your six liter bottle into the coke bottles - Fill as close to the rim as possible - screw down the tops and stand upright in a cool room.

I'd suggest placing the bottles in a bucket with a towel over the top as they sometimes explode with the gas pressure.

Leave to ferment again for about ten days and then very very carefully place upright in the fridge.

Let them cool overnight and the next day they'll be ready for drinking.

Where to get brewers yeast? I might try that.

I bought mine in the UK the last time I was on R&R but if you can't get hold of Brewer's yeast ordinary bread yeast will do. It doesn't have such a high resistance to alcohol so may not produce as strong a brew as Brewer's yeast, plus it is harder to get baker's yeast to settle at the bottom of the bottle - You need to be that bit extra careful not to agitate it when moving, or pouring your brew.

Oh and use Coke bottles or Soda bottles for the second fermentation - DO NOT use normal plastic water bottles.... they certainly will explode.

what is meant by import regulations is probably 1 liter of pure alcohol.

this means you can import 10 liters of beverage that has 10% of alcohol.

can someone confirm?

Why not just buy it when you get here, I'm sure I've seen it on sale somewhere.

150 - 200 baht for a small bottle ..pang mak mak

At a guess not much more expensive than in a Pub in the UK? And saves lugging around extra Kilos.

I love the stuff, nothing better on a hot day. Have to go to Phnom Penh to drink it, though :(

Nope, not true. The rule is one litre of alcoholic beverage, no distinction is made between wine, spirits or beer.

Also, there is no mechanism in place for you to declare and pay duty on excess :(

I've seen cider (not sure about Strongbow itself) in Bangkok bars.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Can you tell us how you have found it? Any particular successes.

Oh, and it doesn't say on the website but I assume it's $24.95 Aussie dollars?

Over the last week, supermarkets have been slashing the price of all kinds of Beer and cidar.

Stongbow you could be 24 cans (440ml) for £10 approx 500baht = 42P a can 0r 23baht a can.... Depending on £to Baht.

Yes, a good time is expected once the GF has few cans, she loves the stuff, mind you, strongbow is only mind compared to some cidars.

Some nice Chew Valley Cider would be good - or Taunton Exhibition. :) Not sure if Strongbow is around at the moment as it ws off the market for sometime. I did have a few pints though in Singapore the other week. There are a few places that sell Blackthorn which I think is better anyhow - but that is normally in cans.

I was born in scrumpy country and know the real deal. 2 pints and your out of it, misty pint with bits in it to look at, no comparison. :)

Totally agree - Blackthorn and Strongbow is the stuff that you drink on a session. The "rough" finishes you off pretty quick.
