Six Charged In Forced Labor Of 400 Thais On US Farms

That's what I'm trying to figure out. Someone else posted that these "agents" can get the visas but I really don't see how. It's so difficult to get a tourist visa for a Thai person much less get them a legitimate visa for "menial" work purposes. The agents must know sleazy ways to illegitimately obtain less common visas.

Forced labor of 400 Thais on US farms? I believe the 400 went there at their own free wills.

As mentioned in another topic, please stop making ridiculous remarks and go back sleep, my dear.

forced? probably not. duped? definitely.

i wonder how they even got the visas to get across the pond in the first place.

I was wondering the same thing. Took me a year to get my wife a spousal visa to the US.

Israeli says not guilty of 'largest human trafficking case in U.S. history'

Los Angeles-based Global Horizons Manpower CEO Mordechai Orian, 45, surrendered to federal authorities in Honolulu earlier Friday. The Israeli head of a labor recruiting company accused of exploiting 400 workers from Thailand and forcing them to work on U.S. farms pleaded not guilty Friday, in part of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation calls the largest human-trafficking case U.S. history. Los Angeles-based Global Horizons Manpower CEO Mordechai Orian, 45, surrendered to federal authorities in Honolulu earlier Friday, a day after the FBI had tried to arrest him at his Southern California home but found he wasn't there.

Although the FBI had been investigating Global Horizons for a number of years, when an arrest warrant was served on Orian, it appeared to come as a surprise. Although he was on a business trip to Texas when federal agents descended on his Malibu home, his wife said they handcuffed her and by her account acted aggressively without any justification. Orian denies all the allegations against him, and expressed hope that he would be released on bond by Wednesday, despite a prosecution request that he be held until the end of legal proceedings.

The Thai's prey on their own people. I know of several cases where a Thai has put up some 30-40k Baht for an overseas job...only to get scammed. They prey on the poor people in the village and their dream of a better life for their family. They should be caught and put in jail...if they had good police here, who weren't in bed with these guys...it might happen?

Exactly. We often discuss here about Thais scamming westerners, but we (westerners) are small potatos. The real action is Thais cheating Thais. Sad really...

And for a balanced comment you should have mentioned non-thai people here scaming Thais and non-thai people scamming other non-thais.

The arrest net expands:

North Dakota man arrested in human trafficking case

The FBI says a man living on a farm near Hope, North Dakota, is in custody tonight in connection with the largest human trafficking case agents have ever seen in the United States. They say 41-year-old Shane Germann surrendered to the FBI in Fargo.

An indictment in Hawaii accuses six people of luring about 400 people to the U.S. from Thailand with lucrative job offers. Prosecutors say the immigrants worked on farms for low pay, had their passports confiscated, and were threatened with deportation. It's not believed that any of them worked on North Dakota farms.

It's interesting that they don't have anything about this on their Press Release page!

Feds dismiss largest US human trafficking case

HONOLULU – A federal judge dismissed human trafficking charges Friday against executives and business associates of a labor recruiting company accused of exploiting hundreds of farmer workers from Thailand by putting them into debt, confiscating their passports and threatening to deport them.

The move came after prosecutors requested dismissal of the case against CEO Mordechai Orian and Director of International Relations Pranee Tubchumpol of Global Horizons Manpower Inc., and business associates.

Eight defendants were originally indicted and three later pleaded guilty.

Authorities accused the Los Angeles-based company of manipulating 600 Thai workers it placed in farms across the United States. It was the U.S. government's largest-ever human trafficking case.
