webfact
Aussie in Thai protests deported Ron Corben An Australian man jailed during anti-government protests in Bangkok, and then kept in a Thai immigration detention centre because he couldn't pay for his deportation, is finally headed home. Conor David Purcell, 30, left Bangkok on a Malaysia Airlines flight on Tuesday to arrive in Sydney on Wednesday. A Thai surgeon who encouraged him to address the protesters in Bangkok, leading to his arrest during the city's unrest earlier this year, stumped up for Purcell's air fare. Purcell spent two weeks at a Thai immigration detention centre after 45 days in jail for breaching state of emergency laws during the protests in Bangkok in April and May. He was to be deported after his jail sentence, but his family was unable to meet the $A460 cost of an air ticket to Australia, his benefactor Dr Pongsak Phusitsakul said on Tuesday. Dr Pongsak, a medical doctor and supporter of the anti-government protesters known as Red Shirts, had met Mr Purcell on April 10 after the Australian was hit by a rubber bullet fired by Thai troops during attempts to disperse the protesters. TAWP
In a recent interview, Mr Purcell told the AAP his first priority upon returning to Australia would be to spend time with family and friends. But Dr Pongsak said Mr Purcell now planned to join with Australian Thais in Sydney who support the Red Shirt movement, as well as conducting media interviews. JusMe
From the full story: "attempts to seek assistance from Mr Purcell's family in Perth to pay the 13,000 baht ($A460) airfare to Australia failed."They did not want to pay," he said." I wouldn't want to pay to have him back home and staying on my couch, either.
YuriGuest2010
The Red shirt Leaders should pay for him since he support the red shirt demonstration in Ratchapasong. It good that he is being deported because he has no right to demonstrate because he is a foreigner and can't interfere our internal affair. Good for our Nation without such foreigners playing Politics.

Just1Voice
"They did not want to pay," he said. Good to see that abject stupidity isn't a family trait. It would appear that family don't want him, and friends seems to be in short supply. Ahhhh, the price of fame. Or is that infamy?

siampolee
Indeed 'tis a trifle amusing that all the ardent Red Shirt supporters who post in this forum could not actually organise a collection to fund the trip back for their mate Purcell. The good surgeon forked out a measly 13,000.baht for a one way ticket to Sydney, again all rather amusing that the Red Shirt leaders themselves could not fund the trip for Purcell. His family do not seem to want him likewise his former Red Shirt allies indeed Purcell is a model born again loser. Ye gods, '' If brains were dynamite, Purcell certainly couldn't blow his nose.'' overhaul38
A very stupid decision. I fail to see what he ever hoped to gain and it seems to be an ill conceived attempt at martyrdom. asiawatcher
Ex Army reservist in Aus - that usually means he did not want to work full time, got a payday apart from his job who had to suffer his absenteeism, and got to play with guns and things that go boom. Then over here, went to get involved with things that go boom, his first real chance to get 'involved' and after getting himself shot by rubber bullets, pimped himself on the Kwai Daeng stage! Yep the guy has a screw loose, and will now go get money for his interviews in Australia as the moronic press there will be silly enough to pay him! When is the next rally? Maybe we can weed a few more out and get them deported!

If you dislike foreigners and think they have no rights why are you communicating in a foreigners language?? Surely Thai must be better?? Insight
Wonder how long it would take the leaders or protesters to clock on if, during the next rally, we got Ali G to go up there? Eureka
The Red Shirts did not want to pay for his ticket as media interest would have died down quickly if he did not have even more hurdles to jump before his deportation. Extra publicity and all they had to do was sit on their wallet.

cardholder
That is good, 26 replies so far and only one with the slightest hint of the absurd notion that Purcell had any right to publicly air his political views. bdenner
<deleted> are these bloody losers polluting the air spaces of Thailand without 2 Satang pieces to rub together? I get the idea that this wacker has been sponging off his family for some time and they have had a gut full. More power to them! whybother
He's going back to join a new protest against the "unelected" Labor government. Supporters of the Coalition Liberal/National Party, who got more votes and more seats in the election - but not enough to form a majority government, are upset at the horse trading and the buying of the independents by Labor, especially since the independents were all basically ex-Liberal or National Party members. They are planning to blockade the middle of Sydney (who would care if they blockaded Canberra) for 2 months, finishing off with burning down QVB and a couple of other buildings around the city. That's the sort of thing that people "who want democracy" do. Edited September 7, 2010 by whybother
