webfact
Chon Buri bids to host World Expo 2020 CHONBURI (NNT) -- The eastern province of Chon Buri has submitted a bid to represent Thailand in the hosting of the World Expo 2020. Mr Senee Jittakasem, Chon Buri Governor, stated that the province had already lodged its bid for hosting the World Expo 2020 to the selection committee for consideration. Other provinces competing to be the venue for the international event are Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya. According to the rule, the chosen province must possess all qualifications set by the Government, which include having a land plot of at least 1,200 rai and being equipped with full facilities to accommodate the visitors. Mr Senee said that the province had proposed an area in Bang Lamung district with the size of around 1,200-1,500 rai. Located adjacent to Thammasat University Pattaya Center and Pattaya Golf and Country Club, he described the site as accessible. As for accommodations, Mr Sanee boasted that Pattaya City had over 300 luxury hotels with more than 37,000 rooms. He also guaranteed that the province would be ready to warmly serve the tourists coming to join the event from every corner of the world. The World Expo is held every five years and is taking place this year in Shanghai, China, from 1 May to 31 October. -- NNT 2010-09-

Hardback
He also guaranteed that the province would be ready to warmly serve the tourists from every corner of the world. This is something that Pattaya has been doing for many years. Many of my friends have enjoyed being warmly serviced in that city.
Changian
I have a feeling that with all the will in the world the good citizens of Chonburi arent going to be able to put on a show like the Shanghai Expo.
Payboy
having a land plot of at least 1,200 rai That almost guarantees that it will not be in downtown Pattaya but somewhere in the bush. With the right budget (wink-wink) even Shanghai can be emulated.
doggie888888
We can't keep the beaches/streets clean, can't control traffic, can't organise proper public transportation nor can we guarantee that there'll be adequate electricity/water/internet connection. Heck, we can't even guarantee security of PM and othre leaders in a small regional conference. In fact, the only thing we are good at is organising a fuc_k in a brothel; several if you like. Expo 2020? Bring it on!

pattayabuggy
Viva Pattaya. I think they need to start with something more simple, how about the "world piss up in a brewery expo"?
Deeral
Sounds interesting - as someone who doesn't live in Pattaya I can see how it could easily work and how the local "mafia" will make a fortune out of building hotels etc......I think that it would haqve much further rmifications than just benfitting Pattaya - Chonburi and Rayong are the industrial centres of Thailand
KhunOr
No, no. It was a misprint. They meant World Expose ... in Pattaya. Seems like a perfect venue.
Pib
Gosh, if Thailand hosted this it would be like "Corruption Gone Wild" for years as the infrastructure was built and money flowed left and right. Speaking of money, I'm sure the host country has to put up a lot of money to build basic infrastructure (i.e., electricity, water, sewer, roads, core support buildings, etc) beyond just providing the land and having hotels. But I will have to say ChonBuri would definitely have the night life unofficial requirement covered. Edited September 8, 2010 by Pib

rheinwiese
Save the money for the bidding process and be realistic. Do something useful with the funds. The bid doesn't stand a chance. Do they honestly think they can compete with the other cities currently considering to host the Expo 2020????? Brisbane, Australia Rio de Janeiro, Brazil São Paulo, Brazil Montréal, Canada Winnipeg, Canada Guangzhou, China Copenhagen, Denmark Lille, France Manila, Philippines Ankara, Turkey İzmir, Turkey Dubai, United Arab Emirates Houston, Texas, United States Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States New York City, New York, United States San Francisco, California, United States Silicon Valley (San Jose), California, United States Los Angeles, California, United States

Deeral
I think the Pattaya-centrics are deceiving themselves.the boost to Chonburi in infrastructure etc would be a massive boost to the Thai economy - (not mention those involved incorruption).THailand as a host is perceived a tourist/visitor orientated country and I think if presented well (unlikely) that it would be a ggood venue - Ithink we could if not forget about Pattaya, look at the rest of the changwat and see what it has to offer. Deeral
in fact it might be just what Thailand needs to flip it into the 21st century. When Brisbane hosted the Expo it was little more than a hick country town - the site is now a trendy riverside development.I'd say there's a lot more going on in Chonburi province than there was in Brisbane at the time. many of these p[laces develped AFTER they hosted Expo Edited September 8, 2010 by Deeral

Simply questioning the statement that there are 300 luxury hotels in and around Pattaya. Really? Foggy Bottom
Be careful what you wish for - the sleaze clean-up that would have to accompany a successful bid would completely vacate Pattaya of its "traditional" nightlife and entertainment - you would possibly find it never returned but stayed wherever it relocated to, and then all the expensive accomodations bought by expats would plummet in social worth and cash value. Read up on the "clearances" China had to engage in for the Beijing Olympics and the Shanghai World Expo - of course, they have a far more authoritative and totalitarian central government system, one which doesn't hesitate to back up local government officials with military force when needed. They are also adept at sending urban shanty dwellers back to the clean fresh air of their rural home towns and farms to produce more food. Nope - the extent and severity of crackdowns, and the duration for which they would have to be maintained, is just too much for the way Thailand operates. e.g. When the UK introduced compulsory helmet wearing for motorcyclists, universal adoption happened pretty much overnight. How long has Thailand been trying to get it to happen?
chivo
they couldn't come up with a better choice of venue than hookerland? i thought the ayuthaya or chiang mai options were better. pattaya is not a 'beautiful beach resort.' somebody really has their head up their something here... schmutzie
No chance. Waste of time and money. Why aren't they pushing for Bangkok? They should submit bids for anything like World Expo, Olympics, World Cup and so on. Thailand has the talent (construction, design, organisation) to pull this is off in great style. Financial worries aside, this could be great "healer". Thai people need something to get exited about, and it isn't getting done by any current campaigns/promises. asiawatcher
I can see the Russian Mafia, the BiB, the top brass of this country and the 'families' all rubbing their hands together but in reality? Not a chance in hel_l! Wishful thinking but the PR machine is till in full swing - ya gotta give to them! They keep trying to patch up the corruption and dirty politics images. OR maybe they are just trying to convince themselves.
