Is This Considered Racist?

If Thai students who won medals from Physics Olympiad are of Chinese descent, Do Chinese Thais have the right to be proud of them or claim them as Chinese Thai even if these students go to complete in the name of Thailand?

Bingo, we have a winner! Give Jingthing a kewpie doll off the top shelf.

I don't see how the TOPIC question relates to the actual question the OP wrote.

I like turtles.

Of course Thailand should be proud of them, educated at Thai university, born in Thailand.

A little bit of history, since intercontinental travel began the interbreeding has basically thrown up one simple rule, you are born into your nationality.

Ethnic pride isn't racism.

If you are a white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant male it seems to be. :D

Do Americans of Irish descent consider themselves Americans or Irish? Americans, of course. Put it simply, there are millions of Thais of Chinese descent who have never considered themselves anything but Thai.

Is the current President of the USA a black, an American, a black American or an American black?

People are increasingly looking for something unique in themselves and reaching back to their ethnic/national roots is one of them.

Does it make them racist?

Possibly only if the term racist is used to criticise any person wishing to highlight their caucasian roots.

Also in a true mulicultural society it loses it's meaning. Lewis Hamilton is a British F1 racing driver. AKAIK he doesn't emphasis his racial background and neither does anyone else.

Of course Thailand should be proud of them, educated at Thai university, born in Thailand.

The question was " Do Chinese Thais have the right to be proud of them"

Of course they do, nothing racist about identifing as Thai from a nother ethnic background, they still regard themselves as Thai.

of korse its racist. the same as tiger isnt a REAL thai!

Ah .... you are referring to the beer, with you.

If 'Thailand' is proud of them surely that would include all Thai....including 'Chinese Thai'......:)

or a real tiger, for that matter...

Of course it is, everyone knows that (dont they?).

You must be Thai, you think too much.

if thais really claimed tiger woods to be thai his face would be all over the place.

even though he isnt considered a hansum fella.

Nainoom, what is the point of this thread? There are Thais of various ethnicities, but they're all still Thai. Are you trying to stir some sort of anti-Thai-Chinese sentiment? I don't get it.

Unless of course you are ethnic hill tribe and born in Thailand... Anybody remember a certain little boy who is a whizz at making paper darts?...

Not of course at all! Many would consider themselves Irish-Americans. Depends on lots of factors, such as the strength of the identity, marriage with other groups, how many generations of the family, etc. But nothing wrong with identifying as Irish-American at all and NOT racist.

'Pride' is an egocentric value & is worthless as it tends to segregate rather than integrate.

Below are the meanings of 'pride' according to the Oxford Dictionary:

* 1. a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one‘s own achievements, the achievements of one’s close associates, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired:the faces of the children's parents glowed with pride he takes great pride in his appearance.

* a person or thing which arouses a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction:the pride of the village is the swimming pool.

* literary, the best state of something; the prime:in the pride of youth.

* 2. consciousness of one's own dignity:he swallowed his pride and asked for help.

* the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance:the worst sin in a ruler was pride.

* 3. [count noun] a group of lions forming a social unit verb (pride oneself on/upon).

* be especially proud of (a particular quality or skill):he prided himself on his honesty .

Whatever PRIDE may or may not be, it is not the same thing as racism. Of course a proud person can ALSO be racist, as they can also be ANYTHING.

If you hang around on this forum long enough, you will quickly grasp what is deemed racist. It just so happens that this phenomenon is pervasive around here. It won't be difficult for you to define and understand, if you know what I mean.

I like turtles.

Here's the original interview with a gentleman I presume is Mr. Tawp. He explains his turtle position.

Is the current President of the USA a black, an American, a black American or an American black?

None of the above - he is half white, half black. I think it's pretty racist to disregard his half white, American mother's side and focus completely on his half black, African father's side.

It could be discriminatory situation if team selection criteria favored the ethnic Chinese. I know of sports programs in Thailand that the poorer Thai kids are priced out of the program pretty much by design. And if they happen to have enough money to get in, they are eventually discouraged and pushed to the side in favor of the Ethnic Chinese.

Obviously, but again you are a describing a different scenario than simple pride in your ethnicity when someone like you succeeds in the world.
