I'm not sure if the software still has this feature, but there is/was an "ignore" feature so you could tune anyone and their posts out.

>>Of coarse if they annoy you to much just check some peoples posts on different subjects

and see how they regularly contradict themselves.

Unlike politicians from every country :)?

and the best way to do this is by spending money forr the good things in life, not by staying home and eating rice with cheap market meat while watching movies on your computer or playing badminton on the road in your moobaan.

Money is the only way to travel, eat good food, retire early. Dont see what the discussion is about, money is a conduit to higher happiness if you obtain it without working too hard.

I don't pay a high rent here i pay 12000 baht a month, rent is money down the drain as far as i am concerned

and i would not rent a expensive villa to try and impress people

Why is having a nice home, a private pool, a good view in a top location.. Got anything to do with impressing other people.. A house has to impress me !! Of anything you list a house is for the owner, not anyone else.

Nice stuff isnt about show, nice stuff, toys, etc are just the rewards you give yourself.

I have a Honda Dream, and the local Burmese gardener has a bicycle.

Suppose that makes me a 'have' and him a 'have not', eh? No, sometimes I get grumpy and stressed out due to the latest interest and exchange rates ..... and he always has this constant smile on his face.

When you boil these facts down, the truth is that he's the one who's probably more happy and content with his lot in life.

All this is relative and has to be taken in the context of motivation, aspiration, and expectation.

I dont have to explain anything but i will try anyway.

I work offshore around 6-8 months a year, at least 12 hours every day and no weekends off, this goes on for between 4-8 weeks, sometimes more, you can’t go anywhere, no pubs, no shopping no anything, i choose to work like that and yes it pay OK money. The equipment i work with cost a lot of money i really mean a lot, everything subsea cost, if something breaks down in let say 1500meter of water all hel_l break loose, some ships/platforms cost 100.000 US$ a day, client rep, company man will be all over you, ask M/S KB he know. So sometimes you get really stressed and work maybe 12-18 hours for days, but that’s what they pay me to do,,,, so why should i not give myself some goodies when i am home, like a nice car or bike or both, i like driving like to go for days, up North or down South and i think that a car with a lot of power, and for safety 10 airbags make life sweet, i don’t need to show off i know what i got and don’t care about what other think, but please don’t say that because people can afford to live the life they show off. My friend live in a 60Mill baht house but drive a small old car, he don’t like driving, does he show off because he is loaded and live in a 60 mill house???

Sometimes i really don’t get it when you guys say it’s a show off to have a nice car or bike.

As for sarcasm it comes with a forum sometimes, you guys will do it as well and some have already done, don’t be so innocent but go back and read all your own tread. That was it, have a great weekend in Phuket i am off for a drive in my nice car or should i take one of my nice bikes, forgot to ask if i also show off when i drive my Harley???

PS. when i leave this world i dont have pocket in my clothes, and i am sure i dont need to take any money with me. :)

This night out just made me think about the people that have so much and put it on show, there are plenty of these people about.

Are they expected to hide their success ?? Is it some form of reverse snobbery to pretend you havent done well ??

Anyone that says that moneys no big advantage has never had a loved one seriously ill in need of high end private medical care.

What on earth is all that about, I said it made me think about the people that have a lot and put it on show, it's up to them and good luck to them, bloody hel_l calm down!!!!!!!

Sorry.. That wasnt supposed to sound strident.. I reread it and still dont think it does ??

But my thinking is the same, if someone wants to have some luxuries in life, and can achieve them, why shouldnt they ?? Whether it be a 60ft swan in the marina, a merc SL on the drive, or a Surin villa in the hills.. I would say anyone that claims to not want those things is probably lieing to themselves, if their lottery numbers came up, theres not many people who wouldnt be getting the brochures out.

Sorry if i have got it wrong but may be you can explain.

I estimate by different posts you made you are in your thirties and have travelled a lot.

In one post you say you were living on the streets in Holland

On another topic you show a picture of a limited edition car ( you say only 1000 made) which you owned in Holland

Did you win lotto or what it just does not add up,

I am happy for you that you live the lifestyle you wish to live

This is aspect of the discussion is pointless. You are talking about two different kinds of people. HDRIDER and people like him are normal people with a few quid who enjoy buying nice things. Anyone who would have a problem with that is obviously a moron.

However, there is no disputing the fact that a huge amount of people with money are complete tw*ts. The phrase 'you can't buy class' comes to mind. These people are arrogant, obnoxious, insecure, and have severe delusions of grandeur. They will flaunt their spoils in an attempt to make themselves feel better about their lack of personality and probably friends. They will also try to highlight the fact that you don't have what they have for the same reasons.

These are two complete different kinds of people so why are people getting them confused.

On a different angle. This thread got me thinking about how many very very rich people there are on Phuket. Millionaires and multi millionaires and it got me thinking would I live here if I was that rich. I love this place with a passion but that doesn't change the fact that one of its major appeals is the cost of living, which translates as less time I need to work to support myself and my family. But if I had enough money to live anywhere in the world would I still choose here, with all its well documented 'third worldish' problems. I feel like a bit of a traitor but possibly I wouldn't.

How about others? More money than you will ever need, would you still live in Phuket. If not where would take your fancy?

Maybe this thread needs a little bit of Buddhism: "Buddha is only a Teacher of the Noble Eightfold Path, while gods or deities are still subject to anger, jealousy, hatred, vengeance, craving, greed, delusion, and death." And a bit of the Beatles as it was John Lennon's birthday yesterday: Money can buy you many things my friend, but money can't buy you love. And one last one: Health is wealth! Good luck and best wishes to you all...

My life between 15 and 25 would make a pretty wild tale.. Best I dont put it all on the forum.. But decided to go make money at 22.. 5 years later I ended up running and owning a pan european construction firm 100's of employees, 20 mil turnover etc.. retired here at 28.. Not bad for a kid who spent much of his childhood in a tinker van on the Moroccan hippy trail.

Thats the clean version.. Skipping the gory details, things whose statute might not have run out :whistling: and general idiocy of youth.

Thats about the gist.. Tho selling the companies represented a problem with my books..

Teens.. House parties.. raves.. General hedonistic kid who wouldnt listen to people who knew better..

Twenties.. Worked to the point of insanity.. gained a few shoulder apes..

Late 20s met a Thai girl in Austria who gave me a reason to not work until I melted down.

OK yes theres rich fools.. same as theres poor fools.. The constant there is being a fool not the money.

Tho I do get your point people often use money to validate themselves or worse to belittle others.. Comes to the money = power thing I guess.

And while you have many people that would talk down neuvo riche and 'new money'.. I actually find self made people who didnt just inherit their wealth far easier to talk to and generally get on with, a lack of struggle and hard times can leave someone without a frame of reference maybe.

How many millionares.. LOADS these days.. The Surin set, those villas are not for mere single millionares... A definite 'multi' needs to be put in front to be buying those.

Comes back to something I have said in other threads.. Phuket can be quite cheap, to live cheaply.. But it is IMO more expensive than the west, to live high end.. The cost savings in cheap fried rice, or a cheap live in maid vanish in the price of a new range rover. Luxury goods are much more expensive here than the west. So depending on your lifestyle and how much you consume them, the balance can shift.

If not Phuket where ?? Hawaii ?? Tahoe ?? N California coast ?? Oz Gold Coast ?? Less easy with a Thai wife tho who has more travel restrictions.

I have read all the posts here and now I feel I should had a little more. I honestly believe money does only give a person security. For different people different amounts and in different ways . But i feel if a person is financially secure he can do what ever pleases him. If he enjoys big bikes, big cars ,big boats and they make him happy more power to him. If he enjoys freedom with no possesses more power to him. and everything in between. For me I have had a lot in life boats ,cars ,houses and travel. For me now I enjoy freedom all i need is my suitcase and access to my money when i need it. Of course I have more than that still have trucks and motorcycles but could wholesale them and leave at a moments notice,I just have them because at the moment they are nice to have and drive.

I would also like to add that at diffferent times in a persons life their use for money is different then at other times. At one time I couldnot live without my sailboat to race on the weekends and go out on everyday. Now I donot even own one and have no regrets. At the time I owned them they made me happy I got rid of them when they no longer made me happy. Fast cars used to keep me happy ,now i only drive trucks and motorcycles.

I have travelled for decades leaving my home country without a suitcase. The airport people looked at me sometimes after a 12 hour flight departing with no luggage but hay I was happy I would buy clothes as I needed them and fill a suitcase to take home. I was happy. I had enought to just go. Now i like to arrive with at least one set of clothes for the climate I am going to.

All I am saying is money lets you live life on your terms, so donot let others influence how you enjoy your money.Let it give you security to deal with it on your terms.

I dont have a boss thanks.. Pretty much unemployable  .. 6 days 'employment' in my life.. Failed summer job as a kid at a supermarket. Only time I have ever been on a payroll.

No.. I found a mate of a mate a villa this summer.. Well sort of villa.. Nice house anyway.

I think I would if things would stay the same. Right now I never experience any of the bad things people talk about on here constantly. The getting ripped off, fighting with Tuk Tuk drivers and if you're 'LivinLOS' getting mugged at gun point every other week :whistling: But that's because I fly under the raydar, keep myself to myself and live a quiet family life. But, and it's a big but, that would change if I had loads of money. As people have said, the more you have on display the more of a target you become. I wouldn't want to pretend I was poorer than I was to stay safe as others have said, and I have no interest in segregating myself away from everyday life, living between my mountain side mansion and the marina. I'm sure that's how the super wealthy do it, never even going near a local market. That's no life for me.

Having said that, I can't think of anywhere else better to be so I would probably stay put.

'Money' becomes also a grab all term for a certain kind of power.. It provides a satisfaction in being able to provide for family..

When I was mid teens my folks split up.. I remember the first time I was making money, and in retrospect is wasnt huge money but at early 20's having a few grand rolling in fast I booked a holiday, for my little brother, and my mum, 3 and a bit weeks to Bali (my first visit to asia.. The rest is history).. I didnt tell them where we were going, just told them pack a suitcase with summer things and bikinis and if they were lucky we might do a week in a center park in Holland.. I still didnt tell them until we pulled into the airport to depart and wouldnt tell them until check in where we were going.

Those 3 weeks, every thing my treat, early 20s.. That was superb. Was also a finger up to my old man.. Screw you, you leave, fine I'll take care of them. Without money, working only a regular job, I wouldnt have had the chance to provide my mum her life. Those things are when it counts.

I think many of us 'locals' try to do that. Over the years I have learned that it's best not to argue with the Tuk Tuks & taxis when trying to park my car or having them force me off the road, I got ripped off again last week in a local shop but Mai Pen Rai, and I've had a gun pointed at me in a road rage incident. Just part of the 'charm' of living here in Phuket ... maybe much worse if living in a big city many other places in the world.

With that much money paying over the odds for things like that wouldn't be a problem. It's only when you live beyond your means, try to have those things when you can't really afford them then the difference in price becomes an issue. Your talking about an in between wealth, where you would be concerned by how expensive it was to live high end.

As for Thai wife being an issue. I've seen you use that a lot when asked why you don't move away. Why wouldn't she have a British passport as my wife does, and have the same travel ability as you??

Sounds like a great life. Sounds like you spend it alone though, might that become lonely one day. Good luck to you, seems like a great attitude to life you have.
