I have heard from one guy claiming that we can get free hospitalcare at the clinics in Thailand

if we have a valid Work Permit.....

Is this really true? It seems unbelievable to me that Thailand actually is giving something to Falang??

Does anybody know anything about this.... or is it just a romour??

Thanks

Well if it is true then it's news to me. I have held an active WP for the past three years and have never gotten free health care, however my employer offers health insurance at a minimal cost which covers non-elective procedures.

No and yes. The WP itself doesn't qualify you for free hospital care, but might open up the way to participate in the Thai socal security system, which includes free health care.

Good advice Mario.Come to think of it, this is what Is offered to us , but it is not "free" per say. A minimal fee has to paid if you elect to take advantage of the Thai social security.

You are also limited to certain hospitals.

Government hospitals.

This is not entirely correct.

We have received a list of four hospitals in our district from the SSO of which only one is a government hospital. Each employee can select the one most convenient for him/her.

But it is true that less and less private hospitals participate in the Social security system for funding reasons and eventually it will only be government hospitals offering the service.

Companies with over 10 employees are now in the prakarn sangkhom social security scheme. You pay a proportion of your income each month, and the employer and government also contribute. You get a choice of hospitals (private and government) in your area but don't necessarily get the one you want (forget about Chula, for example). And you then are limited to the one hospital they designate unless you are travelling away from home and have an emergency.

If you leave your job or retire, you can choose to pay the contributions on your own.

Believe me you would not want to use Government hospitals, although very clean and professional they are not the place to be ,apart from that, why take some thing from people who have nothing , thats why they use government Hospitals , Get insured thats the way to go ,

I had a double hip replacement at Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital in Sri Ratcha it is the hospital I am registered to as I am working here with a Valid WP. They did a fantastic job care was second to none and it cost me only the cost of a private room 22 days just under 1000 US.

I was quoted 1 Million Baht at Bumrungrad.

On another note the doctor that did my Hip replacement works at hospitals all over The Chonburi Pattaya Satthip area doing Ops at private as well as goverment Hospitals. Why should I not use this coverage ?

My employer pays into it as do i monthly. I was also told should I stop working the coverage goes on 6 months and if I want to continue it after the 6 months I would have to pay 450 Baht for full coverage to continue even though I have stopped working. It's a no brainer

I've used our (Sa KAeo) for dental - the town's three dentists all work there days and operate from their own clinics evenings/Saturdays.

They'll do basic 'maintenance' but not cosmetic work, eg i had to have a tooth extracted they did that for 270baht incl painkillers/antibiotics, but for replacement have to attend one of their private clinics.

Works for me.

“Believe me you would not want to use Government hospitals, although very clean and professional they are not the place to be ,apart from that…”

Clean and professional, but not the place to be? That sounds like the place we would be looking for. Is there some other legitimate objection?

“Get insured thats the way to go ,…”

Social Security is a health insurance, among other things, and you pay for it, so what’s the problem?

“…why take some thing from people who have nothing , thats why they use government Hospitals”

That’s not accurate. They use it because they are participating in a different program that is run through government hospitals, but isn’t social security

“They did a fantastic job care was second to none and it cost me only the cost of a private room…”

It should be, and probably was, the difference between a shared and a private room. A nice benefit.

“I was also told should I stop working the coverage goes on 6 months and if I want to continue it after the 6 months I would have to pay 450 Baht for full coverage to continue…”

Another good deal, and it gets better. It’s only 432 baht per month.

For what you get, it would be hard to beat Thai Social Security.

I've noticed that most people who post negatively about Thai social Security are people who don't really know much about it. It's good to see mostly positive feedback here.
