Maybe you should compare the prices you, and your farang missus, pay for things with other expats. I think you will find you are paying way more for things, in general. It's all economies of scale. Maybe you are rich, and just don't care. That's fine, but, others just don't like having the piss taken out of them simply because they are farang.

I personally do not catch tuk-tuks, not based on my ability to pay, but based on me not wanting to support their monopoly.

If I want to compare the price I pay for things the last person I would compare myself to is you who everyone in Phuket tries to rip off. I compare my prices to myTthai friends and work colleagues who in general pay the same as me.

Getting backon topic if I walk into a bar with my bottle of JD or whatever I would say "how much for ice and coke" they would say 300 baht or whatever and I would then make te decision whether to drinkin there or not. There is no scam or problem....

In TimberHut Phuket Town they charge about 3000 baht for a bottle of JD with the Ice and Coke...I just ask the price and then decide whether to pay it or not. Yeah its expensive but its optional. If I drank the bottle of JD and then asked the price and the waiter said its 3000 baht would that be a scam and ridiculous because its so expensive?

The next weekend you go back to TimberHut and just order the same. Now, the bill is 3500 baht. When you say, "Is only 3000 baht. I pay 3000 baht last week." He say, "Price go up." The price didn't go up, you didn't ask first and got stung. That's what I don't like and I do call that a rip off and/or scam. I also question who gets the extra 500 baht in cases like this.

It happened with me one time I got my haircut. She cut my hair the first time for 200 baht. I go back next time and she said 350 or 400 baht from memory. She was just about to start cutting when I remembered to ask the price first. I jumped out of the chair and I ended up paying 200 baht, but she tried it on.

You have admitted to asking the price first, anything after that is your decision to pay, or to walk away, and I don't see that as a rip off / scam. If 300 baht to you is someone else's 30 baht - that's the economies of scale I talk about andif you are happy to pay the 300 baht for ice, no problems with me.

The OP made the error of not asking first and ended up having to pay a price he would not have been willing to pay in the first place.

Now, how many tourist do you think get stung for not asking the price first????

That sounds pretty cheap...you wanna try Bangla, 110 baht a small Singha and a whopping 200 baht a lady drink, no wonder the place is dead with prices like that....nice to see all the bar owners are suffering from the greedy seeds they have sown...serves them right...prices in a seedy little 6x6 brothel more expensive than London, New York and Paris

It is not the bar owners that are greedy, they have to charge these prices in order to try and keep their bar alive.

It is the landlords that ask and get ludicrous prices. Especially the keymoneys are making them rich.

Thats the exact excuse a the owner gave me in Soi Eric when I mentioned the ridiculous cost of their drinks and explained thats why they dont get many customers, must pay rent, electric, girls room, get key money back etc......thats their problem for not having the sense to realise what costs are involved, just dont expect too many punters to pay prices like they are charging

Absolutely nothing to do with economies of scale, which relates to the increase in efficiency of production as the number of goods being produced increases.

I don't think they charge for the ice if you actually buy your drinks from them, and not carry one in from the 7-11 across the street. Good on them.

The steps of the 7/11 does not charge a corkage fee, but ice is extra.

That's right. One farang may produce/generate say, 5million baht a year in income whilst another farang may only produce/generate 1 million baht a year in income. That would mean, in the scale of their two personal economies, that 1 baht for the "poorer" farang has the value of 5 baht to the "rich" farang.

Now, of course, 5 baht is worth more than 1 baht, however, in relation to the OP, the rich farang may have no problems paying the 300 baht for the bucket of ice whereas the poor farang may walk away from it as he views it as unaffordable. IF, they both first asked the price before sitting down and asking for the bucket of ice. :) :)

I have to agree with you. It's kind of what I thought when I started the thread, was what it has turned into. Westerners not understanding what I was even talking about. But, I'm over it and I went to a nice Thai bar with a group of friends on Wednesday. We had a couple of drinks then the bar owner went with us to a concert in Karon. It was fun. Everyone brought their bottles to share... One big extended family that has fun and looks out for each other. Too bad most people just don't get it..

My friend's knew her and I know her now. But we all agreed not to go back to the place they charged 300 Baht for ice. And I though we were going directly to the concert, not meeting at a bar on the way. I only knew when I rode by and everyone was shouting at me to stop and calling me on my phone. We had to wait for a few others to join us so we could all go and sit together at the show...

I don't think anybody had any problems understanding the, going out, drinking with Thais, aspect of your post. I think you'll find lots of people do that! You make it sound like you've just discovered this new group of people, deep in the jungle, and have been welcomed in to their tribe.

If you approach things in different ways, you will get different results.
