Australian Dies In Thailand Drinking Binge

CHIANG MAI: -- The bodies of an Australian man and his American friend were found slumped together on the floor of a guest house bar in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai on Monday, police said.

An initial investigation found Charles Clayton Burgess, 39, from Box Hill in NSW, and Scott Ray Sturgess, 42, from San Diego, California, may have died from heart failure after drinking too much, police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Jantanoodej said.

The Nation newspaper said Burgess was the owner of the bar-guest house and Sturgess was a friend who was in Thailand as a tourist.

The two men had been drinking with friends in the ground floor bar of the guest house from midday on Sunday, Boonlert said.

They were last seen still drinking and shooting pool early on Monday.

The two men were found slumped on the floor near the pool table later this morning, Boonlert said.

A post-mortem exam found traces of narcotics in their blood but there was no physical sign on their bodies that they had used drugs, he said.

Police said the cocktail of drugs and alcohol could have contributed to their deaths.

unopened parachutes...?

totster  :o

Perhaps the bar was on the fourth floor and they decided to have a cuddle and fell over the balcony !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The photo on the front page of the local chiang mai paper shows the bodies draped one across another, as if they both died at almost the same time. In fact the photo looks as if one of the guys is performing oral sex on the other, his head in the lap of the other guy. Not a plastic bag, pair of hand cuffs or telephone cable in sight, but the way the bodies are lying is very strange, anyone else see the photo's and think it strange?

Is it possible to scan the photo and put it up online?

The odds of two people having simultaneous cardiac arrests from natural causes, especially given their ages, is astronomical...

However, if they had ingested "narcotics" (the article doesn't specify which or what the amounts in their system were) together, it's entirely possible for both to OD on heroin at the same time.

A proper autopsy would give the answer.

Anyone know the name and location of the place?

Sounds unusual but I had two friends in High School die together while taking PCP.

I think the threads about Farangs dying too quickly turn disrespectfull.

Where are the moderators?

I'll bet the families overseas, sometime stumble into the TV Forum doing an internet search about the deceased.

Surly, the Guest House owner must have some friends in the area and hopefully they will come here with some info.

Well said.It is very easy to make lite of the situation, because things like this happen so often here.

I thought Farangs only died by "falling" off roofs or balconies.

sounds like they were murdered to me but thats just my guess for sure

More creative than the usual blacony jumps.

Somebody asked location of place. It was a bar next to ??Mango Cafe??on Loi Khoh Rd. Doesn't look like a guest house.

I drove past that morning at 7.30. Police already there.

Heroin traces in dead Aussie drinker

By Ian Black in Bangkok

August 09, 2005

TRACES of heroin were found in the body of an Australian man who collapsed and died after a long drinking session in a Thai guesthouse bar in the northern city of Chiang Mai, police said today.

Charles Clayton Burgess, 39, of Box Hill in New South Wales, was found dead yesterday beside American tourist Scott Ray Sturgess, 42, of San Diego, California.

The pair had been drinking heavily and police initially thought the pair had died from alcoholic poisoning.

But today a police surgeon reported that heroin had been found in the nostrils and nasal tracts of the dead men.

Traces of the drug were also found on paper lying near the bodies at the Poombim beer bar and guesthouse owned by Burgess.

Burgess had been working in Chiang Mai as a trader, marketing souvenirs with his Thai wife. They were married in Thailand about a year ago.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Jantanoodej said the two men had taken part in "a heavy drinking session" with other foreigners in the ground floor bar.

They are reported to have started drinking at lunchtime on Sunday and were last seen still imbibing together twelve hours later.

Early yesterday a maid at the guesthouse found the men's bodies lying on the floor.

Chiang Mai is close to the Golden Triangle, the drug-producing region where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet, and the source of most of the heroin trafficked between the region and the resof the world.
