We have 7 months old Grman Shepherd and he has many ticks deep inside his ears. Would not let us to remove it. I have tried many different products including Front Line, but nothing seems to work. Took him to the Vet and his coment was that there is nothing he can do. I am sure there must be solution somewhere.Any idea?

I used to live where there were lot's of ticks around in Suttisarn many many years ago and a dog I had then got lot's of ticks in his ears. I took him to the vet and the vet simply used a pincet to remove them (then some cream applied with a cutton bud), 15-20 or so in each ear. Worked perfectly. I used a pincet to remove them myself after that and it worked perfectly agan. Nothing! works very well to stop the ticks from coming back if you live in an area with lot's of ticks, sorry

Nothing he can do first seemed like a strange comment from a vet but if you aren't allowed to do it on your own dog, then the vet won't either of course. 7 months is still just a child, ticks in the dogs ears itch like hel_l, let him get used to you touching his ears by scratching him in his ears a bit first, he'll like that. Continue for a week or so building acceptance that the scratching feels good. Then demand more and tell him how good he is accepting it. And at the end of the day, 7 months is a playful puppy, albeit a bit big, you should train him to accept it. Be a bit tougher perhaps, in a nice way of course

I live right up in the sticks me ( Issan) or tick city you could call it ..i got myself 2 dogs and they both have big problems with the ticks

and no matter what cream drops or lotions you use it only seems to cure it for a week or two and then they are all back..but it seems to have died down a lot now maybe due to the weather getting cooler.

PS if you do find a very good solution and works really good and is 100% affective lets us know

There is only one solution that works, patiently waiting for the next season :)

Yes, I understand. There is no problem taking the ticks from his ears, I can reach quite far it is the ticks very deep that I can't reach and he is not happy with me trying. Today Vet give me some pills, so I will try. Hope it will not poison the dog.

Don't worry, the pills won't poison him. Could make him feel a bit down but humans feel the same from some medication :)

Tick lives on the tarmac, around trees, where you have grass, pots etc. Any chance you can reduce the amount of that? Won't stop them totally because they come anyway from neighbours, everywhere, but at least in less numbers. Dirty cement will also attract tick, scrubbing the cement clean with metal brush and washing powder helps (but it's one heck of a job, has to be done evey 10 days or so for it to help...)

so we also have this ongoing tick problem with several kinds. i actually studied their movements. they wait on the floor in cracks, on pillows, everywhere and when a victim walks past, they literally jump forward with their two front most legs and grab at the hairs of the victim and then crawl around onthe body until they find a good place to latch on.

my lhasas are now , sadly, totally clipped down, and still get the ticks in their beards and mustache (the only area i left furry cause they look like rats otherwise)... also ticks in pads and around eyes and nostrils... :bah: everyday, twice a day i pull ticks off them, burn the ticks (my revenge) and now i ssee that the spray that i bought for 200 NIS : unltrashieldex, has startted to take affect. more dead ticks, less ticks and we are still , although already november, in a hot weather and nooooooooo rain! so no respite from the animals. i am doing absolutely according to instrucitons because i think some of the failure of the tick sprays is not applying correctly, within the proper times so now that i am doing accordingly, we are seeing a bit of change... we have gotten used to the citronella smell also. the good thing is u can wash the floors with the stuff if u buy the concentrate (for stables) IF U DONT HAVE CHILDREN CRAWLING ON THE FLOOR ) ... hopefully the israeli ticks in our area which have become resistant to all the regular frontline and similar products, and in which ivermectins also alraedy seem not to affect, will not develop resistance. appraently our area has been hit extremely hard, including livestock, since the weather has not gotten cold as it is supposed to be so the ticks have gone in to their next cycles (some types have a two year cycle....)... the dogs are so used to be deticked as they always get chicken bits during and after the they sit quietly for it... sometimes up to an hour 1 each dog (thick fur even when clipped down, lots hiding in pads, along ear rims. this stuff btw works good on stand up eared dogs keeping away specific flies....

good luck.

I found ticks on my curtains and washed the curtains (including ticks) in the washing machine on 90 degrees for over an hour, the curtains and the ticks came out shining clean and I still today cannot understand how on earth they survived, True

same here, along with bleach and stain removers and three hour cycles, they came out waving their little legs and laughing...

Well he had a dose of the pills yesterday as recommended by the vet, and so far it produced bad diarrhea , but the ticks are alive and well. See what happens in few days.

If u take the dog to a vet, the vet can give the dog a shot for about 50 baht whereas the ticks will crawl right off the animal within 30 mins and will keep them off for up to a month. I do this with my two dogs when high season for ticks occur.

I find if you put a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (raw) in their food or water it helps a lot. Also raw garlic and ginger in their food is good for them and these three things together seem to make ticks and mosquitos a lot less prone to go for your animals blood

weve tried everything: from rosmary oil rinses to wahtever else homeopathic. sof ar, as ive mentioned before, poisons are the way to go.. btw, one of the active poisons in the spray i am now using is a direct oil from the chrysathenum flower......i was all ready to go out and make a paste of the leaves to spread on the dogs fur.... but the spray seems to be working now, and i can spray the dogs at longer intervals ... and still now cold weather here...

I have tried that and the ticks didn't crawl off, some did perhaps but not not enough for me to see any or to make a difference.

To add to the above - 2 good farmers remedies.

1. one or two Sulphur or sulphanilimide tablets in their food. Same principal as the garlic,it comes out through their skin and the ticks don't like the smell.

2. When you get the ticks out, encourage your dog to eat them. We used to do that in Oz with paralysis ticks which are lethal if not found. Apparently it sets up an immunity. The vets may disagree but I've seen it work.
