Is Office Depot Going Out Of Business?

Recommended Posts

I went is search of, amongst other things, a sturdy folding table a few days ago, intending to stop at Office Depot, Phrom Pong, on my way home. I spotted and OD on Silom but it seemed to be closing up - no problem, back to plan A - Phrom Pong.

At PP however I found the OD had not only closed but the site levelled.

Is the whole chain closing down or was I just unlucky with these two branches? Is the Seacon Square branch still open?

BTW I'm looking for the solid white formica-topped (2.5cm) folding tables with the sturdy square Al. legs to match the ones I already have, if anyone has seen any recently.

They've just opened in Asoke in the basement of "Midtown Asoke" (previously LPN or Lumphini Plaza) opposite BB building.

edit: not sure what they have in the way of furniture there.

Silom one is open. I was there two days ago for ink. Does not look like it's closing down to me. Hope not anyway as it is only a short walk from my place.

Well, maybe the Silom branch was having a stock-take on Thursday, and Phrom Pong has relocated... Ho hum I'll go look at Seacon next week, that's where I got the tables last time (18mo. ago).

Thanks for the responses and any further intel.

The Silom branch in the United Building/Tower basement has now moved upstairs to the 9th floor. Everything crammed into one third of the previous space, but surprisingly lots of customers are making the trip up to there. They still do ink cartridge refills, but the poor girl has to work on the floor next to a display cabinet!

9th floor? probably the rent went to high for them!

thanks for the info

Yes I went back today and they had this time put up a big banner saying moved to 9th floor. Lifts take forever and it's a nasty, dingy place. if you're into stationary they are giving away, if I understood it correctly, cash coupons for about a thousand baht. But you have to fight your way past a Noise-Nazi to get in (some pooying with a karyoke machine literally bellowing at the poor checkout queue two metres away).

Seacon is still open but the staff were comatose. Eventually I found my desk at OD, Carrefour, Rama IV and it was 600THB cheaper than OD Seacon 8^)

There is probably another explanation as there are now many empty shops on the 1st and 2nd floors. Even the Deli France at the front is closing down. Somebody big taking over???

Maybe Office Depot is taking over a larger area, and has moved upstairs while remodelling is done.

United Building/Tower

A quick story from last week:

was given marching orders to go to the Office Depot in Silom.

internet says 5th floor of Silom Complex (Central). (no longer there) Two charming mall workers on the fifth floor were of no assistance. went down stairs and a block away to the internet cafe. happy to find this thread coming up under a search for the OD in Silom; however, in doing an internet search by name of Union Building, according to this post, nothing came up.

Now, on a foot search for United Building/Tower.

First person didnt know where it was;later a security guard, only twenty meters from "Union Building/Tower", said it was at Soi 9.

Off I went; at 3pm there were only mad dogs, Englishmen and myself out in the hot midday sun. Hoofing it to soi 9 found there was nothing there; asked a local merchant, who was in the same boat as me and who hadnt a clue.

Back out into the midday sun and after a search that took the better part of an hour got a taxi to a Thai friend's house who lives in the area. He didnt have a clue either. Back home and the next day spent time and figured it out.

While a funny story, a major pain in the arse trying to locate United Building/Tower.

The purpose of this post is to clarify the location and its address.

The structure itself offers in large letters the name of "Union Center" on the front (though its under major construction/renovation at the time of this post) and the organization owning the place calls itself "Union Center Co.,LTD"

Union Center (across the street from a Christian Hospital and roughly across from the Patpongs - a few minute walk from Central and Silom Complex (mall)-come out of Silom Complex and turn left; going away from the Sala Daeng BTS).

The United Centre is on the south side of Silom Road, about 100 metres west (towards the river) from the CP Tower (the building with McDonald's on the ground floor.)

The Union Building is about 200 metres further west; I believe it is at or near the corner of Soi 9.

With regard to Office Depot, when I was last there about a month ago, I believe there was a sign at the entrance to their basement location saying that they were temporarily relocated to the 9th floor while the basement is being renovated.
