THE DEFENSE MINISTER HAS SAID THAT MORE INSURGENT LEADERS WILL TURN THEMSELVES IN

The Minister of Defence has admitted there has been an increase in the turnover of insurgency leaders in the 3 southern border provinces, due to the belief state officials would treat them justly. This is coupled with the fact that escape to foreign countries would lead to a life of hardship.

Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangura Na Ayutthaya (ธรรมรักษ์ อิศรางกูร ณ อยุธยา) admitted that at first, people were scared by the insurgents' threat to have them cease commerce and work on Thursdays and Fridays. Therefore, officials had strengthened the amount of security. Officials have been told to be more just in cases of turn-ins by insurgent group leaders. He said he believes there will be more turn-ins if officials can ensure fair treatment for them. According to General Thammarak, one leader-level insurgent who had turned himself in had made the decision due to the harsh living conditions experienced in hiding abroad, and because he believed state officials would treat him justly.

Weather there would be a release of the 24 detainees arrested from the Tak Bai (ตากใบ) protest dispersal incident, Gen. Thammarak said this would be up to Pol. Gen. Chitchai Wannasathit (ชิดชัย วรรณสถิตย์), the Justice Minister. He said if evidence was unclear then they could be released, adding that the release of all 24 was actually preferred.

The Defence Minister remarked on the insurgent leaders that have escaped into Malaysia, saying Malaysia has increased the strictness of border passing, while the Thai Army is trying to create stability along the border in collaboration with Malaysia.
