I have just ridden round the island to get the ferry and noticed a lot of fishing boats tied up. Are we in for more bad storms ? Accuweather gives some rain but the fishermen don't normally take cover unless it is going to be really bad.

Mayor Crusty have you heard anything ? I was hoping we had seen the last of the crap weather.

It's as if you're insinuating that the Fisherman have some kind of special powers way beyond the capability of Satelitte's etc to detect bad weather, hilarious..:D

Pissed so early in the afternoon. :o

No not insinuating anything but rather my experience of living here on the islands in the gulf and spending a lot of my working time here on the water tell me that whenever I see lots of fishing boats tied up then bad weather is coming. As said they only tend to tie up and seek shelter when they really have to. They also tend to have a better understanding of the sea and the weather than us.

It seems windguru and accuweather missed this one. Malaysian shipping has a "danger to small craft" warning out for Samui waters until Tuesday and The Marine police have confirmed there is a storm warning out. So Dunc don't go diving., get your Saeng Som sodas and put your feet up :)

Cheers Crusty, It seems that TV has been infested by posters who seem to think they are very funny all of a sudden. You post something and get a smart arsed, sarcastic reply which I presume they think is hilarious but isn't. I wasn't going diving but going to look at a dive boat so a heads up is much appreciated as you cannot take a boat out to give it a spin if there is a small crafts warning now can you. Cheers again

See this, I think can explain the fishing boats behaviour:

South to be hit by more rain

By The Nation

The flood-related death toll rose to 255 yesterday as the Weather Bureau warned of more downpours hitting the South.

Wiboon Sanguapong, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said that as of yesterday, nine provinces were still under water, namely Kalasin, Roi Et, Ubon Ratchathani, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Surat Thani and Phatthalung.

Flooding in 42 other provinces has eased and restoration is underway.

The bureau also said temperatures were likely to drop by 1-3 degrees Celsius as another ridge of high pressure from China extends to upper Thailand and the South China Sea.

I agree with you H2o. Not being a weather expert and not being good at reading weather maps etc, I too tend to go by visual indicators. (When it's raining, I know that we will have rain. When its sunny, I know that I am OK until the clouds build up.)

The fishing boats are a very good visual indicator. If there are a lot of boats moored at Bang Rak then I know to watch out for a storm. As you say - these guys are not stupid.

There are about half a dozen boats moored there at the moment with one or two more heading into the bay. Possible storm coming up.

These guys are not stupid because the local fishing fleet operate on Citizens Band radio Frequency and the warnings were out last night. Dunc, in your business, I would suggest get a CB radio and have your boat boy have it with him at all times.

Chain of low pressure areas moving across Singapore area. Probably amount to nothing more than heavy showers here BUT if the Samui

fishermen are herding their boats together I'm not going to take any chances.

Have you checked out windguru for Thursday 4am, if it's true, it will make earlier this month seem like dew drops.

It'll be like taking a shower under the Niagra Falls!!!!!!!!!:o

Yeah but as it gets closer to the day, they usually revise it. Here's hoping :( Poor dive shops must be feeling it !

Coming from you ( the master of smart arsed replies ) That really IS hilarious!

Have you ever considered it might be people getting their own back?

Navy aircraft carrier seeking shelter from coming storm, anchored about 3-4km south of KPG on Thu 2/Dec/2010:

Not seeking shelter, but mooring for an organized visit agreed with KPG schools

Psst! The real reason it was here was to prepare for the rumoured new service competing with Samui Airport. ;)
