Actually sb's answer is not correct in all cases. But I can't be bothered to go into detail about the Thai social security system.

its a very complicated system, but you would have to have worked and paid into the system to get something ( very small amount )

A Thai friend received half her salary for 6 months, but had to report for occupational training during that period. It amounted to about 8 or 10k per month and, as Boater rightly says, she had made social security payments before she was laid off. No prior payments, no unemploment benefit.

Sorry dmax, but obviously your wife is not in the know. If a Thai is employed and social security payments are deducted from their wages/salary, they become entitled to unemployment benefits if they are made redundant or laid off. They are paid roughly half their salary for a period of about 6 months (I forget the exact length of time, but it is limited). They also have to turn up for occupational training and check avaiable job offers posted at the benefit office. The idea is that the money is to tide them obver until they find new employment. Even I will get paid a pension (due to my ss contriibutions)although I will have to take it as a lump some instead of a monthly pension.

One point is that the great majority of the work force, i.e. most farmers and self employed are not in the social security system to begin with so have no entitlement.

Come to Ireland and get 200 euro per week........thats why we are bust now.

Ireland's problems aren't from bailing out the unemployed.  They're from bailing out the (formerly) rich banks.

I find it disgusting that only Thais who paid into the system receive benefits. This goes against everything our Western governments have taught us about equality and fairness.

I think any unemployment compensation system should require those who receive payment must have paid in. Otherwise how do you differentiate between those working and those unemployed?

Not everything is better in Thailand. cool.gif

Imagine if every single person in the world without a job could be persuaded to kill themselves, the end of the world recession in an instant and a host of other problems too. :)

Can't you do better than that. I thought you were famous for the wind up. It must be a slow weekend though cos no one has bitten yet. :D

It is the same even in Europe's more socialist states. Unemployment benefits are given if one has worked at least 6 months over the last 18 months etc, and made payment into the unemployment found.

Don't mix it up with getting social welfare, if someone is completely outside the system. That usually requires much more intrusive digging into your economics, job-search etc.

And the criminally low corporation tax and appallingly stupid lending decisions by the banks and a government which encouraged what was plainly a suicidal property boom and a public which was stupid and venal enough to believe them.

why should someone be paid for doing nothing ?

agree, but there about 20 million people in England doing just that

Considering that there are only about 60 million people in Britain , I think you exaggerate a little, Why knock a great county unless you cannot hak it in the UK. What you are saying is not striktly true , you have to have enough credits before you can claim dole money.

I made a nice profit out of the stupid system

Or for the bankers to commit the same act after returning the money they stole and gambled!:whistling:

And you are too lazy to read the whole thread. I suggest you read or have someone read the information on this website to you. I can't be bothered translating it. http://www.sso.go.th/wpr/home.jsp

Well, after having paid into the Thai Social Security System for years, I am told I can claim benefits, although I am not a Thai national. If I was laid off: 50% of monthly salary (not exceeding 15,000) and this for 6 months. If I resigned: 30% of monthly salary (not exceeding 15,000) for 6 months.

I have no problem going to the govt and claiming this benefit. I have paid the maximum social security contribution for years (by law) and pay a substantial figure in taxes as well. I shall pursue this and report back to the forum. If it turns out that it is possible for a foreigner to claim unemployment benefits in Thailand then I will start a new thread.
