Abdominal pain, fever, blood in urine ... Rushed to emergency at Sao Paulo Hospital. Doctor on duty showed very little concern, nurse took blood test, Doc said it was bacterial infection, prescribed antibiotic and two pain killers, sent to cashier to pay. One week later still blood in urine returns , go back to different doctor and request urine sample be taken, discovered fluke which Docx said wasn't common in Thailand. Suggested the I go to Hua Hin Hospital for exploratory surgery and prescribed albendazole for 8 days. One week later still blood in urine so check this out. Googled info and parasitic fluke is very common in Thailand and drug of choice is praziquantel. Looked up albendazole and protocols require 28 days of twice daily for 28 days then 14 days off and then another 28 days. Hummm Doctor said that this uncommon parasite is usually a secondary result of other complications and recommended exploratory surgery????? Then prescribes ineffective treatment program????? Wow is this a scam in the medical field ?????

I don't think a scam. Just cluelessness.

You need to see a proper infectious disease specialist. Come to Bangkok. If concerned about cost and don't mind the waits of a government hospital, Siriraj is fine and not too far from the Southern bus terminal, on same side of the river.

If you can afford to go private, there is a western specialist in infectious disease (one of the very few western docs licensed to practice in Thailand) at BNH hospital twice a week http://www.bnhhospital.com/en/findadoctor.aspx

For future reference, if it is something serious that can't wait to travel to Bangkok, best bet is always the nearest provincial hospital. Never a district hospital, which is what you'd find in Hua Hin. The large governmnt hospital in the provincial capital.

Where possible, always best to come to Bangkok.

I had a 3 day stay at SP hospital Hua Hin and I must be honest, I felt quite scammed. I had a stomach infection which was never officialy diagnozed.

The most disconcerting part of it all was when I first seen the Doctor. I told him I had a pain in the left side of my abdomen - just under the rib cage. He immediatley told me I had apendixitus (spelling?) and that I would have to be operated on that day. An office girl walks right in with a rate sheet and immediatley suggests I need VIP room for at least 3 days. It was just so..... Money grabbing and mersonary, the nature of it all. I was too shocked about the fact that I was about to be put under the knife to worry about the costs and quick diagnosis and just paid up.

Lying in my VIP room, it dawned on me that the apendix is on the right side of the body, lol. I called the nurse to send the Doc up to answer this and 2 hours later he walked in and very lazily explained "Sometime feel pain on other side because of nerve". I knew this was utter rubbish but before I could do anything about it I was rushed off for an x ray, ultra sound and an hour after that I am lying in my bed with an IV drip and an antibiotic drip.

The Doctor would pop into my room every 3 hours to see how I was..... It would be a 30 second visit in which he would say "you pee pee ok? You poo poo ok?" and then he would go. Each time he did this it cost me 1000 Baht.

On day 2 i was told I did not have apendixitus and that they didnt know what I had but I seemed to be getting better so "dont worry".

When I went through the invoice at the end I was amazed at some of the stuff they had charged me for. It was incredibly expensive and I could have got better lying at home with a book.

No diagnosis was made. All they could say it was an infection somewhere in the abdomen area.

Also the 'VIP' room had old wallpaper hanging off the cieling and no curtains - alowing the sun to blaze in all day.

It was a very bad experience for me and I will never go back there.

Sorry for the bad spelling.... Where is the spell check feature by the way?
