Three shot dead in Thai south: officials

YALA, December 22, 2010 (AFP) - Suspected Islamic militants shot and killed three people, including a married couple, in Thailand's restive south as authorities boost security for New Year celebrations, officials said Wednesday.

The husband, 49, and wife, 47, were gunned down at their stall selling pork at a weekly market in Pattani province on Tuesday evening.

Police said the man worked for the local authority.

Also in Pattani, a 43-year-old man employed as a construction worker at a Thai army base was killed in a drive-by shooting as he returned from buying food early Tuesday afternoon.

According to a Pattani security official, the local governor Wednesday instructed police and soldiers to intensify operations, including round-the-clock checkpoints, amid heightened fears of attacks over the New Year holiday.

"We are focused on risky areas such as roads, markets and security around teachers and high-profile people," he said.

Suspected Islamic insurgents have waged a violent campaign in Thailand's deep south near the border with Malaysia since January 2004, targeting Muslims and Buddhists, civilians and security personnel.

More than 4,400 people have died since the violence began, while over 7,000 have been injured, according to the non-governmental organisation Deep South Watch, which monitors the conflict.

A never ending problem without a solution. I hope they are able to enjoy the holiday in South.

What holiday? Christmas is a supposedly Christian festival but mainly celebrated by people who have not been inside a church since they were christened. It has become a bastardised commercial event marked by greed, drunkenness and excess. There are more family and other personal altercations at Christmas than at any other time. Why should the Thai people, [particularly Muslims), concern themselves with Christmas? Christ to Muslims was just another minor prophet. You might have some difficulty in persuading some Thai people that you could gather together three wise men in the same room.

New Year's is an official holiday in Thailand.  I believe the 1st and 2nd are holidays and for many the 3rd as well.  Christmas and New Year's are pretty much synonymous.  In Thailand it has little to do with religious beliefs.

And yes, it is interesting to note that the vendors were selling pork.

January 1 is a legal holiday is it not?

Perhaps the gentleman was making reference to that?

In any case, RIP 3 victims.

I suppose I'm not the only one that noticed 2 of the victims were vendors of pork. Not reading anything into it, but.............

Yes that is interesting selling pork. Not sure what it has to do with it but as a earlier poster pointed out they are not fussy about who they kill.

The Koran says kill the infidel and to them selling pork might make one a infidel. Truth be known they could care less they target and carry out deaths of Muslims. And Abhist wants to make it possible to bring in Muslim law. He should give his head a shake must be his British education or lack of.

Perhaps if we were all to take a look at how Christmas came around there may be more understanding of the tradition but whichever way you look at it, Islam treats anyone other than Muslims as infidel and that includes JC and the 12 MLM'ers. 12 apostles and word of mouth marketing and look at what happened with religion. In my opinion, religion to me is still a pain in the ass. Add to that no one knows what day Jesus Christ was born on. From biblical description, historians believe his birth probably occurred in September, approximately six months after Passover. One thing they agree on is it is very unlikely Jesus was born in December.

However, back to the history lesson, December the 25th, the pagan origins of Christmas, ancient Babylon, celebrated the feast of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature) with heaps of partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving were traditions of this feast. It had nothing to do with JC and the Christians. But the presents were a good idea if nothing else. Put a few smiles on people's dials!

Further, in Rome, the Winter Solstice was celebrated many years before the birth of Christ, called Saturnalia, honoring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. In January, they observed the Kalends of January, representing triumph of life over death. This whole season was called Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. The festival season was marked by much huge parties, booze and debauchery. Also ancient Rome created the tradition of 'Mummers' who were groups of costumed singers and dancers travelling house to house entertaining neighbours thus starting the Christmas carol tradition.

So looking back on why Islam cannot accept a date for partying and celebration, makes you wonder how they really wish to cope in this modern world we live. They are a sad and sorry lot to be sure and the Mullahs will continue to keep it that way!!! Happy Christmas to all who believe and happy partying to all those who just want to have a good time. Sorry Islam, no room for you in this party if you want to continue your stupid killing spree, no room at all for you or your 'religion'. cool.gif

Just to let you know Jesus was not born on the 25th. It is just the day that his birth is celebrated. The Romans all ready had a Holiday on this day so it was compressed into one. very sorry missed a good part of your post. strange, pc must be on its way out.

you're talking from your bum.

there are more family get-togethers than ever. maybe most aren't church goers but there is joy in eating together and giving presents.

muslims love jesus more than most christians. hardly a minor prophet - muslims believe in the virgin birth and the resurrection. they just don't believe jesus is god himself.. like adam, god created jesus. perhaps your experiences cloud your ability to reason, and that's a shame.. but not as much as your cynicism.

quite right.. the romans adapted it to the traditional solstice celebrations they already had.

perhaps if most of the world, including rome was in the southern hemisphere, we'd celebrate christmas on june 25th.

and sorry, 'islam' is not a person..
