Tot High Speed

It seems like Sansiri has gotten some seed money to delay anyone else to come in (was told that I could get any provider I wanted). Talked to both True and 3BB, True is waiting for Sansiri to sign off on the paper work so they can come in and install their service...been almost 3 weeks and still waiting.

So looks like will be stuck with TOT, would it be better to get a higher package or would it be a waste of money?

When it comes to reliable/fast internet in Thailand, "Location, Location, Location" can make all the difference. And when I'm talking Locations I''m not just talking comparing locations hundreds of kilometers apart like Bangkok to Korat; I'm even talking Locations that can be very close together...even just across the soi from each other. Local circuits make a BIG impact on the reliability/speed you get. As you've seen from TV posts, you see folks all over Thailand who have unreliable/slow internet from True, 3BB, TOT, etc., service and you also see folks all over Thailand who have reliable/fast internet from True, 3BB, TOT, etc. But the folks who have unreliable/slow internet will understandability be more prone to post this problem on TV....I did the same thing for a while until I finally got some descent internet service.

I'm kinda like you in terms of being a captive audience to TOT in my moobaan in western Bangkok as only TOT lines are in my immediate area/moobaan. For internet packages, I have a choice of TOT, TOT, or a few TOT internet concessionaires (e.g., JINET). The TOT concessionaire monthly packages come at a significantly higher cost but with these concessionaires I'm still using the TOT line/DSLAM. The fastest internet speed to my moobaan is 6Mb after TOT recently upgraded their DSLAMs a little....it was only up to 4Mb until a few months ago...and two years ago it was only 2Mb.

Anyway, I'm on the TOT 6Mb package right now and my IP internet speed "in Thailand" is 5.25Mb and I get in the 1 to 2Mb IP speed consistently to international web sites. When I say IP speed, I mean your actual data speed after the ADSL overhead control bits are considered....you normally get IP results when doing speedtests. ADSL overhead takes away about 10-15% from the internet package's advertised speed like 6Mb, 10Mb, etc. My TOT is very reliable...in the 99+ percent area.

Good luck...getting good internet in Thailand is somewhere a crap shoot.

Thanks for the reply, just hope to get the same reliable service as you!

Forgot to mention that when downloading files with a download manager like IDM or Orbit I can get up to a 5Mb download speed from international sites, but it's usually in the 3 to 4Mb range. I'm not into the torrent thing (yet) so I can't speak to torrents speed.

Maybe there is still hope that we'll be "granted" access to the internet vie TOT - Thai govt -. Since June 2010 our "name" has been on a list. The govt only allows 20 subscribers per village of 300 homes.

If there is a list of people wanting TOT, why the hell aren't they (govt) providing it to paying customers??????? Oh I know!!!!! thai logic.

Glad for you folks who can download anything faster than 0.03 k/ps. Wish I could.

Durn, 0.03Kbps...that is indeed slow and I know it has got to make doing a lot of things on the internet very frustrating. I expect use of ThaiVisa is a really slow affair for you; even for me ThaiVisa is one of the slower web sites I view/use even when compared to web sites in the US. Been that way ever since ThaiVisa did their software upgrade about 6 months ago...no amount of Ctrl-F5, clearing of temp files/cookies, etc., makes a difference. It very well could be my internet provider, TOT, but TOT was the same provider before ThaiVisa upgraded their software.

Best of luck in becoming one of those lucky 20 in 2011....you could then probably setup an internet cafe for the remaining 280 homes and make a few baht...but be sure to get that work permit if you do! ;)
