Local Thai Sources Of Dietary Fiber

Featured Replies

My 90 yr old Pop has cronic IBS-d and in the past, I've had psyllium sent over from the US in bulk by the lb. and even with the postage, it was cheaper than the bottled metamucsal sold locally.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any other good local cheap sources of fiber here in LOS?? He now doesn't like rice.....used to eat brown rice, but now no rice...only pasta and potatoes.

Thanks in advance.....

Most large supermarkets now carry stewed prunes, both Sunsweet brand and others.

Kelloggs "All Bran" cereal is excellent, almost pure fiber. For that reason, it doesn't have much taste but if you add bananas or other fruit and, if possible, sprinkle on some cinammon along with milk & sugar it's quite palatable.

Oatmeal is also helpful, available in all the supermarkets. But the above is more fiber than oatmeal.

Tamarind fruit also good, it's sort of the thai equivalent of prunes.

Hi Sheryl,

Welcome back...I was hoping to hear from you.

re fiber.....I do make my own bread and can incorporate bran and I do add oatmeal most times. But, I thought that prunes were the cure for constipation.....he has opposite, diarehea.

I was looking for a bulking agent like psillium hulls[sp?] that may be available locally.

I have heard that basil seeds have a similar effect and am looking for a local source.

Any ideas or comments??

Hi

yes there is a wholesale place in BKK----its range of bran (from Australia) seeds, nuts, floor and anything else you want is Tuk La Dee, if you want to send me an e-mail address I will send you an attachment---there list is long.

Dear Jaideeguy,

I buy psyllium husks online from Good Karma in Phuket, and I buy probiotics from Natural and Premium - they deliver in Bangkok. Contact me by PM for further details.

Hope you are keeping well,

Thanks Bill for the tip. I googled 'Good Karma in Phuket' and got the website and great find. Seems like a new operation and we should support them. I saw psyllium husks and powder @ 400thb/300gr and altho expensive compared with amazon.com, at least they are available.

I also saw for the first time here in LOS....chipolte peppers, but unfortunately no masa flour to make tortillias.

So, You've had good luck with their service??

Thanks again, Jack

I have found it cheaper to have my buddy send me about 15 bottles of Wal-Mart Fiber Therapy, which is exactly the same as Metamucil Fiber capsules, but cheaper.

Including postage, still much cheaper then buying the local brand.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mucilin (similar to Metamucil) is sold in pharmacies (packets and cans).

Put just enough water in so it would mix. It provides good bulk.
