Thai firm wins contract to build elevated expressway project in Bangladesh

BANGKOK, Jan 18 – Thailand's Italian-Thai Development has won its bid to build an elevated expressway for about US$2 billion (Bt60 billion) in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka.

Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot on Monday said he has been tasked by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on behalf of the Thai government to witness the signing of the contract for implementation of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway PPP Project.

Italian-Thai Development and the Bangladesh Ministry of Communications will ink the agreement tomorrow.

Under the contract, ITD will build the four-lane elevated expressway with a length of 26 km. It is believed to be the largest investment project supported by the current Bangladesh government.

The elevated expressway was initiated by the Bangladesh government with an aim of reducing the traffic problems and enhancing the efficiency of communications services in Dhaka where the traffic congestion is quite heavy.

The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) under the supervision of the Bangladesh’s Ministry of Communications acted to find a successful bidder for the project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) cooperation.

The Dhaka Elevated Expressway PPP Project centres on construction of a four-lane elevated expressway located in the capital, starting from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport north of Dhaka to Jatrabari to the south.

At present, Mr Alongkorn said, Bangladesh still lacks basic infrastructure and public utility projects. So, it is a good opportunity for Thai businesses to invest in construction in the country. (MCOT online news)
