Parttime Teacher Legal?

Hello there,

I have a quick question and it might came 100 times before but I didnt found anything exact about this.

A school director told me that its legal if u work in a language school that is registered and proofed as a school, and if u work part time only as teacher (german in this case).

Most of the language school's are just companys with certificatet owners but not the status as school.

So I hope somebody knows more about this and can help me out

I might add that he told me that I didnt need the work permit for the reason of parttime teaching and his registry..... Is there anything true about this?

He in the business for quite a few years already and seems like he knows about it but might be just to get cheap working staff?

All work needs a working permit even volunteer work.

He may not want to get a work permit for you, but it is required and you have a chance of getting into trouble if you don't posses one.

Also, be aware, the employer has conditions about being able to get a work permit for someone. I believe there is a monetary amount and something like 4 Thai employees. Employers are not free to just decide to hire a foreigner.

Strictly speaking you need a work permit for any work, paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time.

However, it has to be said that a fair amount of teachers in Thailand do part-time work directly or through agencies without work permits amended to cover that employment - even teaching staff employed by Thai government departments

Yes - as said, strictly speaking you need a WP for any work - paid or not. However, as Paully said, many teachers here (especially at language schools) do not have a work permits (or one that covers the school at least). Generally it is known - I know one school where the teachers teach a local police station and they have no WP's - but is ignored. This doesn't mean that you can/will not get into trouble if someone decides to make it one, but there is a massive shortage of properly qualified people with WP's that are willing to work for peanuts compared to the demand - and often hard for language schools to cover the requirements (4 Thais per foreigner and paid up capital requirements) - so it goes ojn and will continue until the Gov realises this and makes WP's easier for such roles - which is never.

IU would be worried though that he is lieing to you - shows his willingness to risk your liberty for the sake of his wallet.

Thanks again for your answers.

I talked with some other teachers that worked here for years without WP and it seems really possible as long as noone want to make a problem.

But I dont want to risk to go into jail or be apart from my daughter here, on the other hand the bills need to be payed.

And yes it shows what kind of person the school director is if he lie about something like that.

You'll get used to it.

Pales into insignificance when compared to government lies about WMD within Iraq though.

So much for our countries being so great and honest.
