Hi,

I'm planning to buy 3 Seagate Momentus XT's as an upgrade for three company laptops. The laptops are functioning great, but the original hard drives are way too slow.

is the result im hoping for :)

My question is if anyone have seen them for sale around here, and at what price.

Thanks!

Go SSD if you want speed, and choose your SSD wisely, too. E.g. one of the fast ones, and one that doesn't deteriorate to HD speed over time.

Here's a comparison test: HD vs Hybrid vs. SSD

The hybrid is somewhat faster than a pure 7,200 drive, but not very much so. That Windows startup test on YouTube must be some sort of best case scenario.

I didn't watch the video until I read the above.

It is indeed skewed, the left hand (control) machine has a 5400 RPM hard drive. The Momentus is already a 7200 RPM drive which explains the performance increase over the control, the hybrid SSD adds some icing to the cake.

Our OP may save some cash by replacing his existing drives if they're slow 5400 RPM units with modern 7200 drives.

I have one in my mac book pro and works well. Fast but don't expect instant on.

They were supposed to be 7200 when i ordered the machines, but they are ridiculously slow. I got a Intel SSD in my own laptop, but its not an option to put SSD's in the staff's laptops.

I guess I will go to Pantip or so to take a look.

The tests I linked to shows them to be faster, but not more than 5% vs a normal 7,200 drive. IMO it's not worth the money, or going through trouble finding one. If it's almost the same price and readily available - why not. If it's much more expensive - better get a bigger drive instead.

@Crossy - that they used a 5400 drive in the "control" units makes sense - a 7200 is way faster on startup all by itself. Another thing you could do is use a smaller drive or one that's nearly full - that should slow down things considerably ;)

Back when I did some research on a new drive I decided that hybrids really didn't make much sense. The Intel SSD I have now on the other hand - wow, that speeds things up considerably.
