U.S. Expats In Thailand: Health Insurance?

Featured Replies

Hi - I am a U.S. citizen currently arranging my move to Thailand. I am currently covered with U.S. health insurance but I will only be covered for emergencies in Thailand. I want to ask other U.S. expats - what have you done about health insurance in Thailand? Is there local Thai health insurance? Or international health insurance options?

THANK YOU

I just pay the small stuff myself, and if I ever have a major problem it'll either be an emergency and therefore covered, or I'll fly home to get it done. Routine medical care is very cheap here, and most of the health policies you buy exclude motorcycle accidents, which are the most likely cause of a need for emergency care.

If you are under 65 the sponsor here has a good group plan you can get into ThaiVisa Insurance. I used it before 65 for a couple of years

There are a couple of problems with what you say here. The first is the fact you will not be allowed to board an aircraft to fly anywhere if you have a major problem/emergency and secondly all health policies cover motorcycle accidents.

It is therefore only prudent everyone should have medical coverage "just in case" the unexpected happens.

I am from Miami, USA and i have been living in Hong Kong for the past three years. With the help of friends back in Miami who have traveled i went with Pacific Prime International health insurance. What i found interesting was that they are brokers and they deal with all the major insurance companies and they tailor an plan just for what i will need. Good Luck, BR

Quite correct, Pacific are the underwriters behind many companies and the good news is that Thai Visa Brokers deals direct with Pacific Cross.
