Any Long Time Teachers Here?

Featured Replies

Are there any long time teachers on this forum?

Just wondering, as maybe there is a lot of truth in what people say - teaching English in Thailand is alright for a while for not for more than a few years.

In my experience, after doing it for 10 years, I was sick of it.

I don't know ANY teachers who have done more than 10 years and still like it.

Please prove me wrong.

Don't most jobs get boring after a while???

To be honest mate I've never enjoyed working full stop!

More than 20 years, mostly in higher education overseas. I teach another subject in addition to English, which tends to keep me reasonably fresh. I certainly couldn't hack working in Thailand, though. That made me seriously consider finding alternative ways of making a living.

Things are much better in my present location. Most days I love it, but as with every job, I have the occasional bad day too.

I've been teaching here for 17 years however I am selective where I work and the last 5 years have been in a managerial position.

This is about the length of time it took me to reach the burnout point in Thailand. I think it's important to know when to give it up so one doesn't put a burden of misery on the students. Students know instinctively when a teacher no longer enjoys teaching. I've been out of it for six years and now I am going back into it again with a fresh outlook and better qualifications.

Overall teaching experience for me includes seven years in the USA, one year in Korea, and two years in Thailand. I am still having fun and haveno thoughts of stopping.

I taught for 4 years in the same full time job in a primary school and lots of part time work from summer camps to business classes...

I'd had enuff after 4 years but the 4 years I had I learnt alot and now I have returned to blighty to go into further education to better my self for a long term career...

I truly enjoyed my whole time working as a teacher I would recommend it to anyone to gain some worldy knowledge and become a better person for it.

I see a difference in my positive outlook on life now, compared to my friends and work colleagues in blighty. They moan about paying too much tax! (so do I) but I tell them they have houses, cars, insurance policies, legs, arms etc, they have no physical problems only mental ones. I think of the poor people in Thailand slaving away everyday just to eat.

I've seen it and lived it and I feel a ###### site better for it and I appreciate things more than I ever did before. Amen. :o

Thanks for TEFL teaching in the LoS. :D
