My friend has a business on Jomtien complex which has been badly affected by the roadworks ,He has a lease ,

Is there anyway that he could find out if the owners of the buildings have been compensated by the local government ?.

if so he might try to get a reduction in rent whilst the road is being finished .

Not a chance. The guy who runs Ace Cafe, over by the Machanu statue, has had his business almost ruined during the last 3 years by the vast sea of mud that they left outside his premises. It became so bad that he has even had to return to working offshore. Not a satang in compensation.

To my personal knowledge that road whole area has been under construction for at least 6 years.

Many road contractors have come and gone during that time, after doing a bit of work and then disappearing with the road budget funds. There have been long periods when nothing was done at all, interspersed with periods when pathetic attempts have been made to get the project back on track.

On of the highlights to this situation occurred about 18 months ago when the road became totally impassable and the local traders and residents were so fed up that they held a protest outside City Hall. This prompted the Mayor to make a site visit, following which he got a few road rollers and diggers on the site and they carved out a rough dirt track which served as a 'road' for the next year or so until it was finally hard-topped.

If you were to list the top 10 most corrupt projects in the history of Pattaya, the Thappraya road project must rank near the very top. It has clearly involved the very cream of the Mafia crop as it has been a total blight on the tourist business on Jomtien for this entire period, yet no-one could do anything about it - including our beloved Mayor.

As for affected traders receiving compensation: in the words of John McEnroe:

" YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS??? YOU MUST BE JOKING!!!

You must be overstating things as this is an "International Tourist Resort Town" - the Mayor told us :whistling:

Spicey Martin ? ,he never worked off shore before ,but he was lucky to find a job as a kitchen manager on an off shore rigg .He also broke up with his wife who runs the Ace Cafe you mention by the Hanuman statue .He mentioned that he still supports her or else she would not be able to keep the business going .

Even if some sort of legal action is available to the tenants either as a group or individually (and I really think there is but I am not a Thai lawyer) the people involved in the project probably do not want lawyers snooping all over nor the publicity and may just end it all out of court, either by settlement or a paid hit on one of the plaintiffs. :crying:
