THAI to buy 75 aircraft plus parts between 2011-2022

BANGKOK, Feb 26 – Thai Airways International Public Co, Ltd (THAI) plans to buy 75 aircraft plus spare engines between 2011-2022 at the total cost of about Bt457 billion with an aim to developing its routes and increase earnings and to decommission aging aircraft, according to THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand.

Mr Piyasvasti said the THAI board has approved a plan to acquire 37 aircraft with parts: 11 narrow-body types and 26 wide-body with a combined cost of about Bt216 billion. The acquisitions will be made between 2011-2017.

Also, the board has given the green light for the national carrier to buy 38 wide-body jets -- comprising 21 firm order and 17 option order – for operating intercontinental and regional routes between 2018-2022 worth approximately Bt241 billion, he said.

THAI has earlier bought, and is awaiting delivery of, 26 aircraft, including 12 A330-300s and six A380-800s from Airbus and another eight B777-300ERs from Boeing. These planes will replace 21 aircraft whose rental contracts are due to expire.

During calendar year 2010, THAI posted a total revenue of Bt184.27 billion, up 12.4 per cent from the previous year. Out of the total revenue, earnings from sales and services soared to Bt18.98 billion, an increase of 11.7 per cent from 2009, thanks to a sharp reduction in staff salary. The airline company paid a three-month bonus for 2010 to its staff. (MCOT online news)

So they nullified the previous cancellation of aircraft purchases? Do they have to pay double penalties?

The Thai board must have been looking at my posts in the last months, but I never had a reply from them to thank me. They must have seen the post about the air force,--I said keep the F16s they are only the same age as many of the Thai fleet

This announcement is well overdue. I sometimes wonder if Thai is run as a commercial company or a government department. I think its pretty clear that if they dont offer competitive fares and services, customers will choose other airlines that do.

I do believe the A380s are to replace the ancient 747s on the Bkk Lhr route? I travelled this some months back and it was one of the worse flights I can remember.

It´s about time for the Europe Routes too.

I was flying with them in 2009 from MUC to BKK (ancient B747)

and in 2010 from FRA to BKK (even more ancient B747)

The Service / Food was good but the Entertainment System and the whole plane was

90s Standart. I would love to see a A380 on the Europe Routes to FRA & MUC

Even with the ancient fleet in the past 2 years they have raised the prices. So if they are spending all these money, do not be surprised if they increase the price again.

Just as an example, in the low season up till about 2 years ago i could get a special price BKK-SYD-BKK for 17000(all taxes included) in the past 2 years the cheapest price i could get is 26000, so i guess once all the money is paid i should be expecting the price to be around 40000(in the low season, specials)

All the replies so far of an airline that used to be decent. Wait for it though soon will come some board member replies, superb food---and service, class-and a top airline ( well it was voted up there)

Well, they were good when I flew them several times, in 2002...since then they seem to have taken a backseat in terms of upgrades compared to other flights. Flew KLM and SAS recently and I found them to be better upgraded -- and sounding from posts here, Thai Airways still haven't upgraded their 747-300's.

I hope you'll see one.

I like the 747 as an airframe. It is a little faster than most other aircraft (I am not sure about the 380). However, Thai has neglected to upgrade the interiors.

Many airlines business and first are quite nice, but the best economy I have flown in awhile was a Continental 777 from Narita to Houston. I am talking about structure here. The food and service were just OK, but the seats and entertaiment systems were the best I have seen. What I want in a plane are good seats, good entertainment, and large overhead bins. Put that in any airframe and I am happy
