PAD to collect signatures to impeach PM

By The Nation

Yellow shirts movement planned to collect 20,000 signatures in a bid to impeach Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for alleged neglect of duty which caused the country to lose territory to Cambodia, a movement leader said Friday.

Prapan Koonmee said the movement; People's Alliance for Democracy, will put pressure on Abhisit government by collecting 20,000 signatures, as required by the Constitution, and present them to the Constitution Court.

He said the premier should be impeached for neglect of duty by bringing up 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Thailand and Cambodia which the PAD claimed that it was legally ineffective as a tool for negotiation with the Cambodian authorities.

The move caused Thailand to lose territory to Cambodia, he claimed.

Meanwhile, Maj Gen Chamlong Srimuang, a PAD core leader, said the government was trying to put pressure on the PAD.

He said that now the PAD would step up its campaign to inform the public that if Thailand loses the 4.6 square kilometres of contested land to Cambodia, the kingdom will lose another 180,000 rai (72,000 acres) along the border to Cambodia.

PAD has to hurry, the PTP has the impeachment and censure debate in two weeks time ;)

Correction: PTP petitioned for impeachment of PM and eight ministers and after scutiny the petition has been forwarded to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The PTP filed a no-confidence motion with the House of Representatives. This censure debate will be in two weeks time.

(edit: add correction. One of these days I'll get the terms right (I hope))

Good thing 20,000 signatures don't count against 64 million Thai's opinions - what a stupid waste of time - he is stepping down at the house dissolution - haven't these people got homes to go to or better things to do?

The good thing is that I haven't heard the "Abhisit is a Yellow Shirt puppet" strawman for some time.

I'm of the oppinion that Abhisit must be doing something right as he seems to be annoying both the red and yellow shirts in equal measure, it is my suspicion that the Thai people as a whole may see it the same way come the next election.

With the number of PAD/NTP protesters seen the last few weeks, getting 20,000 signatures may take a while. A petition also needs to be accompanied by solid reasoning and proof before a case is considered. By that time the House will have been dissolved and new general elections called. Could be an automatic dismissal of the case: 'no longer relevant'. Mind you all kind of courts and commissions already have a substantial workload, could take time even for a dismissal. Well, democracy in action. :)

I concur. Not being seen as either a puppet of Thaksin like PTP or a puppet of the PAD/Yellows is a BIG plus for the near future. The cynical amongst us might wonder about the motives of the PAD -- and if it weren't Chamlong doing it I would wonder if they weren't trying to help the Dems out too!

Perhaps he wants to stamp out corruption.

The multi-colored shirts got 30,000 to impeach three PTP MP's (Jabbering Jatuporn, Kung <deleted> Master Karun, and the Deputy House Speaker) and those impeachment proceedings are occurring now :

I think if I was Abhisit I'd say bugger all this <deleted>, claim my British citizenship and set up a nice legal firm at some swank London address raking on the cash.

Understandable reasoning but actual PM is needed as transitional solution to reform the country and make it better, in my opinion. As we could see, thanks to the Democrats in Government, voting system is changed right now, even most of senators saw it as not good for public. Who will have benefits of this new voting system-we will see.

so funny - maybe Abhisit now won't get the yellow or the red vote!

Well, since Thailand has a parliamentary system of government he won't get any votes, His party will though. Probably more than PTP and the PAD party's candidates. Which means he will be back. Unless he decides he's had enough of this idiocy and finds something else to do. Couldn't blame him for that.

If I understand correctly the present PM is a constituancy candidate and not a party list MP.

That being the case he will stand as a candidate in his constituancy where the people will then vote either for him or for another candidate.

Then if he gets elected and his party are invited by the King to form a Govt the party then vote for who they want as PM.

That being the case he will in fact, if he is to become the next PM need to receive two lots of votes and win over others in both cases.

Will the military be assisting the Democrats by conducting operations to disrupt PTP campaigning and framing their MPs with LM charges as the Junta did in the previous election?

"framing"? ---- and no the military didn't do anything to the PTP in the last elections.

Interesting question, also a wee bit leading as in suggesting rather than proving. Opinion, perfectly ad- and per-missable.

Answer of course is NO, too bloody busy finding those missing weapons ;)

I suppose if there were actually PTP MP's with those charges, it would be more believable.

And as the Red Shirts have repeatedly shown, there is no need to frame them. Their words frame themselves.

If anyone is as tired as I of the disinformation, ignorance and lies being peddled here, I would recommend "The Legitimacy Crisis in Thailand" edited by Marc Askew under the auspices of King Prajadhipok's Institute. It's available at Kinokuniya and Asia Books.

So there are PTP MPs that have been charged with LM? Which ones?

I agree about the disinformation regarding PTP MP's charged, but as usual, I won't go to the inflammatory length of your "ignorance and lies", that you are so fond of posting.

Can one find details of the PTP MP's that were supposed to have been charged in the book cited?

The thread, not particularly your contribution, has not been illuminating

My recommendation was for open minded intelligent people who enjoy reading and expanding their understanding. You should try it.

Oh ok, so your reply to my post had nothing to do with my post.

Thank you for clarifying.

No your post was boring and off topic, but not offensive.

As to books I wonder whether you can recommend any recent works on Thai politics you have found helpful?

At least this time your ad hominem attacks are .... well .... nope, can't come up with a valid reason this time either.

Steely D,

I really hope your right. There are few other PMs in the world that have survived what he has in the past couple of years, and is there another PM that leads a coalition of 7 parties. He is by far and away the most stabilising force that Thailand has seen for a long time, whatever his detractors might say. What alternatives are there?

Can't remember but with respect this last post of yours is hardly riveting

More pertinently any recommendations on the reading front? I would be incredibly impressed if you came up with a sensible response.

You can always scroll up to read them, but perhaps we've already digressed enough with your own off-topic-ness.

Go on, surprise me.
