Changing Jobs - Visa Issues

Hi all, first post for me and hope someone can help me.

I have gone through many posts on here and think I have the gist of what I need to do but would just like to have someone confirm that I am correct in my thinking.

The situation is, I work at a school in Bangkok but start a new job up country at the beginning of May. I have an extension of stay which runs till March 2012 (it has just been extended), my wp expires in December 2011. My current employers have been great and will not cancel the WP immediately even though I finish work at the end of this month. They did this as I wont get a new WP from my new school until the beginning of May when the contract starts and they seem to think I will be able to then just obtain a new WP on my current extension of stay.

After reading posts on here, I'm not sure about that and think I will have to cancel my current extension of stay and get a new Non Imm B in Laos, is that correct?

I move up north at the beginning of April but due to other commitments I can't leave the country till after Songkran, that's the reason I won't cancel my visa and go to Laos at the end of March when I actually leave my job. My plan is to return to BKK after Songkran and head to immigration with a letter from my current employers saying that day is my final working day and get my visa cancelled then. I will then get a 7 day extension and head to Laos asap with all the paperwork from my new school and get a new Non Imm B. Will I be ok doing this? Many thanks in advance.

You do need to cancel your current extension of stay on last day of work and only a 7 day extension would be available so not enough to get new extension of stay so yes your plans should be to obtain a new non immigrant B visa and go from there. If you can not obtain paperwork for the B visa just a tourist visa entry would tide you over until it is ready.

I thought I would have to cancel even if I am being told something different by my current employers. Maybe it has been done before but in the same province or office, obviously that's different in my case.

In theroy its possible to transfer WP's/extension of stay, but in practice its far easier to start the process all over again..ie go and get a new Non-imm B
