GERMISTON, SOUTH AFRICA (BNO NEWS) -- Dozens of people were injured on early Tuesday morning when a passenger train partially derailed in South Africa, emergency officials said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said the partial train derailment happened between the Nights and Ravensklip stations in Germiston, a city in the East Rand of Gauteng province. Germiston is known for having the country's largest railway junction.

"Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the passenger coach had partially left the tracks," Wicks said. "The cause of the incident remains unclear and will form the subject of an internal investigation."

Wicks said that emergency service personnel treated a total of 58 people, many of whom sustained minor to moderate injuries. Two people were being treated for serious injuries.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
