Beung Kan Becomes Thailand's 77th Province

The interior minister and the Beung Kan general public have attended a merit-making ceremony to celebrate inauguration of Beung Kan as the 77th province of Thailand.

Interior Minister Chawarat Chanwirakul led government officials and the Beung Kan public to give alms to 77 Buddhist monks in front of Beung Karn municipality office after last night's countdown to open the gateway to Beung Kan which is now officially the 77th province of Thailand.

Monks were invited to perform religious rites at the Beung Kan Administration Office which is temporarily used to house the City Pillar Shrine until the shrine construction is complete.

Beung Kan province contains eight districts separated from Nong Khai province, namely Muang Beung Kan, Seka, Sopisai, Boongkla, Beung Konglong, Pakkard, Porncharoen and Sriwilai.

Acting Beung Kan Governor Sompong Arunrojpunya officially starts his duty today while congratulatory signs were put at important venues to mark the historic event.

Local residents celebrate inauguration of Thailand’s 77th province, Bung Kan

BUNG KAN, March 23 -- Resident of Thailand's 77th province, Bung Kan, on Wednesday morning celebrated the newly-established province’s inauguration, chaired by Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul.

Mr Chavarat led the public in the new northeastern province of Bung Kan to offer food to 77 monks during the morning alms rounds at the Bung Kan municipal office, to mark the official beginning of the new province after a bill on the establishment of Bung Kan, separated from Nong Khai province, was passed and published in the Royal Gazette.

Acting Bung Kan governor Sompong Arunrotepanya has been in office since Wednesday onwards.

Last night, residents gathered at the Bung Kan city gate in the provincial seat to join the countdown of the new province’s inauguration with 77 skyrockets lighting up the sky for the celebration at midnight.

The Cabinet in August upgraded Bung Kan district of the northeastern province of Nong Khai as Thailand's 77th province comprising eight former Nong Khai districts, as proposed by the Ministry of Interior.

The upgrade to a new province followed requests by local residents as the Nong Khai authorities faced difficulties in managing administrative work and resolving border problems in remote areas, as far as 350 kilometres from the provincial seat.

The 77th province encompasses some 4,305 square kilometres, consisting of eight districts of Bung Kan, Seka, So Phisai, Phon Charoen, Pak Khat, Bung Khong Long, Si Wilai and Bung Khla with a combined population of nearly 400,000. (MCOT online news)

If they can do this here then most Jangwats will be sectioned off. Udon about the 2nd biggest city, it administers god knows how many Ampers and tambons/villages, To me there will be many people Upgraded to higher levels, this will create big new offices( Nice contracts) more admin staff to put lipstick on, and text, again it says= for better admin.

My question is why wasn;t the NongKai admin made to work harder for there administration monies ???............take a look at the money that goes into building these new buildings, look at all the towns (amper) provincial offices, and look at the ratio of work carried out there.

No-one seems to be accountable to what they do. The bosses get money from a junior, who then will get promotion, this just happened here in my locality, yes 100,000 bht for a move up, and for another 3,000 bht a month. Ha 55555

Compared to the other provinces:

- In size, it comes in at about number 50.

- In population, it comes in at about number 60.

- In density, it comes in at about number 45.

I'd say that's big enough to make a new province.

Also, owing to the shape of Nong Khai province and the location of Muang district, some of the eastern districts were close to a couple of hundred kms – on bad roads – from the administrative capital – prior to separation.

BUENG KAN, 23 March 2011 (NNT) – A merit making ceremony has been organized by the Interior Ministry in the northeastern province of Bueng Kan upon its official establishment as Thailand’s 77th province.

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul presided over the merit making ceremony at the Municipal Office of Bueng Kan, during which civil servants and local residents participated in food offering to 77 Buddhist monks. Last night, a celebrative event was also held, featuring 77 sets of fireworks and a countdown to the official founding of Bueng Kan as the 77th province of Thailand at midnight.

Bueng Kan was separated from the northeastern province of Nong Khai on the Thai-Lao border to increase the efficiency of local administration. It comprises eight districts, namely Mueang Bueng Kan, Pak Khat, So Phisai, Phon Charoen, Seka, Bueng Khong Long, Si Wilai and Bung Khla.

Was up there in January - quite a prosperous little area now - rice giving way to rubber and eucalyptus plantations and plenty of pick-ups around.

Our old Gardener was from Phon Charoen and would have been delighted at this news.

Anybody have a link to a map that shows the split of Nong Khai?

Dark red is the new province, to the west is what it split from.

Thats good, I was NOT knocking the new area, merely saying big money had to come from somewhere, when your on a tight mortgage you don't build a new kitchen on the property. So its the new hub county in Issan/Laos  Had to laugh at the names of you two posters, "coincidence"

Which country in the world with a land area somewhat smaller than France sees a benefit in maintaining 77 tiny provinces?

I know the answer: Thailand!

The reason? Local bureaucrats and politicians demand their own little fiefdoms that they can prey on financially.

Another case of "Amazing Thailand" indeed. As if 76 provinces weren't already more than enough.

Victoria, Australia, with a population of about 5.5 million people, has 79 local municipalities/councils each with their own offices, each looking after the local roads, each looking after the inhabitants of the area.

England, nearly four times smaller than Thailand, has 83 counties and unitary authorities. Can we not have a yawning emoticon for the repetitive, and often wide-of-the-mark, cynicism which permeates Thai Visa?

p.s "Tiny"? If Korat were a country it would be larger than 44 other countries by area, and larger than 57 by population.

O.k. for "goads sayk mayts' does it flaming matter you pitbulls, it's how well it is administered, Thailand then doesn't need as many WHY.. corruption doesn't need more, unless you create more like this. It's admin doesn't work, as hard as the west equiv/ with vast amount of staff doing little. If some cannot remember back home we have grades aa/ao/eo/heo, each has a job description and accountable. When you go into any municipality/provintial office and see them all working their buts off here-no fibs please. compare their national holiday days and time off for no reason, days out at so called meetings 10 buses escorted by the bib. o.k.

If someone was honest enough and said that county is big and it's staff are inundated with work, create another-I would applaud the decision. This is my point.

Hate to split hairs but isn't this new Province only the 76th in Thailand.

If 77th then this would be counting Bangkok as a Province when it actual fact it is not.

In order to have the title "Jangwat" then there must be smaller administrations within that area called "Amphers".

Bangkok does not have "Amphers" it has "Kets":jap:

No shortage of funds there then. I wonder how many poor rice farmers attended the shin-digs. Glad to see the monks got their cut.

If this was a neglected and under funded part of Nong Khai it doesn't say much for the effectiveness of their local representatives does it? As others have pointed out, another bowl of gravy to dip ones bread into. Divide and rule Thai style.

Population France-then Thailand, compare infrastucture, organisation work related accountable admin, Goodish policing, lower class folks oportunities. all this counts, France will need these provincial centres to give effective Admin and care.

Thailand having all these provincial governments to take care of WHAT, FARM LAND sugar cane, rice farmers, provincial bib useless, lazy corrupt officials, usually on the fatter side through their paid in advance social life, I live in the adjoining province, this is fact, .....forget sizes of land area, who has what amount of provinces-it's down to do you need all these when you have little to be responsible for.

wow.

While in many European countries they already think about cutting down the number of provinces/administrative districts to reduce administration costs and sources of graft and arbitrary behavior of local powermen, Thailand affords itself a new province!
