I was intending to return to Thailand in June/July and as I could not return citing visiting friends but only either retiring or residing I emailed Hull and recieved a reply on the 9/2/2011 stating they would accept my rental agreement as residing in Thailand.

Today, as I am about to downlaod the visa pack things seem to have been updated on the 9/3/2011. I now see mention of "RESIDENCY PERMIT FOR THAILAND" required. What is that and how do does one get one?

I have emailed Hull for advise. Has anyone else come across this and can help? Thanks for any help forthcoming. I currently have a multi entry 'O' visa and that is what I am looking to renew.

As interpreted locally here in Thailand it is a letter you get from either immigration or your embassy in Bangkok stating your address in Thailand. Hull may have a different idea.

There is always misunderstanding on this subject. There are two situations:

- The need for a letter, acceptable to Thai immigration offices, which shows your current address. This is also sometimes refered to as proof of address, statement of address, and the term 'residency letter' is also used.

- Residency Permit is an entirely different thing. In many countries it's referred to as Permanent Residency, or PR. In the Thai system, a foreigher with PR can stay forever with no further need for visas (unles of course you break some obvious rules). PR is the step before full citizenship.

There is a lot more information about PR in the first major section of the Thai Visa froum.

The term "Residence Permit for Thailand" as used by the Hull consulate for visa applications cannot possibly mean Thai Permanent Residency (PR) document. So that leaves an address verification letter from immigration or your embassy.
