MaiChai
Have you tried searching Thai Visa? Alot of folks are English teachers, some have their own businesses, some work with their wives (don't officially work here but Thai wife has a business), representatives/expat staff for foreign companies, work remotely (programmers/developers), embassy staff, etc, etc. The list is endless. Warhammer820
i am well aware of the older crowd and the english teachers.. I was just curious to know what other jobs farangs can do besides teaching. When i was in sisaket, i met one nice man who was around my age who was teaching at the local university. Everyone else was much older than i am in that city.

I would easily tire of that standard old stereotype of Farang teaching item. I could even imagine that such pursuits aren't the majority for Western residents. You'd be surprised what folks are doing to get by...

I understand WHY the official policy is against foreigners working in Thailand (even as a form of charity), but in practicality it just makes things tougher for the Thai people. The "semi-official" policy coming from the very top is to keep the average Thai person in a form of servitude so they act as sheep in the hierarchy.

zzaa09
[ The "semi-official" policy coming from the very top is to keep the average Thai person in a form of servitude so they act as sheep in the hierarchy. Perhaps this description might be closer to mythical proportions, as a greater percentage of "average" Thais gear towards the independent and self-sufficiency way....city slicker or country bumpkin. General speaking? Yes, we're all rather taken to this sheep and shepard ideal. 'Tis the nature of our existence.

Floating currency is very useful and practical, in my life-story anyway . The floating currency is already there from the banks, financial institutions and other commercial and private market players. I guess if you want to get technical, I don't create or destroy anything. The world was already the way it was before I got here. And it will probably be that way when I leave. When you have that level of awareness, the only thing left to do is Oh, and to add to the OP's question, some people attend school online or start a business, and use some of their loan money to live overseas. Or save up and move. One guy I ran into in the states said he came to Thailand with $6,000 and lived for a year like a "king". And extension of the save and move concept is if you have a job that is not portable, work your azz off for 1/2 the year, then live in "paradise" for the other half. One person I met also did the peace corps. You don't make much, but your living expenses are paid for and you get other benefits (such as educational scholarship) that you can use later after you leave.
