did anyone (else) noticed that restaurant chain Black Canyon raised their prices so incredible much ?

same dish, overnight with new menu, now costing 35% or more...

plate of rice : from 10 to 18 baht now

american club sandwish : from 90 to 125 baht now

and many many many more crazy increases

To be fair they haven't changed their prices for a fair while, and the cost of everything has gone up food wise. Cooking oil has quadrupled in price, so yes I can see it is a fair mark up considering they probably wont change these prices for the next 3 years.

Inflation is a bitch isn't it

expect a lot of your favourite pubs and food outlets to follow suit very soon

Which will soon reflect the decreased customer base and activity. And the revolving spiral....

Not sure where you buy your cooking oil, but it hasn't quadrupled in price in recent times. Not even doubled! It may be 4 times what it was 50 years ago though!

The revolution is coming. Laying in wait. The ever-broadening differences between basic food stock and never-changing wages for average folk will be the culprit. The rising cost of food usually has nothing to do with dwindling supply, but instead greed and overt profit are to blame. The general disparity between wages and prices seems to be a worldwide affliction.

I assume you have missed the minimum wage increases of late ...... (in Thailand)

Please. Such a retort and defence is useless. BTW.....that proposed minimum wage legislation has been put on the back burner. Nothing has officially been activated. Do you keep up with the news...??

I keep up enough to know it went up in 2009 and was approved to go up again in 2010 (with the date of the increase scheduled Jan 1st 2011. The MOL.go.th website is offline so I couldn't verify today :)

edit ---

someone on the minimum wage thread has done the research

(thanks rubl)

They were looking cheap compared to S&P, etal, thus I guess it was due? Food is still pretty cheap in Thailand if you compared to, well anywhere really, even if alot of other things have rocketed in price here.

If you are finding Bangkok expensive, my tip: move out to one of the other cities in Thailand (Korat, Khon Khen, Pitsonulok, etc). Personally I think Bangkok has got too big and ugly and the smaller cities can still give you all the benefits of a city with better prices, better food, alot less traffic and easy access to the countryside. I am seriously thinking the move...

It is all a balance. Cafes and restaurants raise their prices and clients cut down on their visits. I almost go to one of the specialty coffee shops anymore... unless I'm with someone who insists on going there. The fact is that I seldom drink coffee anymore. It's neither good for you nor is it worth what they charge for a cup of it. I'd rather drink cold water with a bit of lemon (Min-ow).

15 years ago it was an inexpensive holiday to stay in a hotel near Sukhumvit & Soi 4 and take in the nightlife at Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza. But, the the bars and hotels kept raising their prices and clients started going elsewhere. When the punters left for Pattaya, most of the pretty bar girls followed them. Then, to compensate for lost income the bars RAISED their prices instead of lowering them to bring the customers back. I haven't stopped at Nana Plaza in 5 years except when passing through, and the few times I looked I noticed the formerly filled bars are now down to just a couple of punters and a few sad old hookers. Prices haven't been lowered either. Phuket has done the same and I'll never go back. To be fair, Pattaya has also raised its prices, but not nearly so much. As someone already pointed out, you can usually get a far better deal in the smaller cities. I know Chiang Mai is cheaper than Bangkok.

18THB?! 125THB?! Oh, no! How ever am I going to pay my rent and eat?

Please. I suppose if this theory of yours where customer attendance will dwindle came true, consider those businesses lucky -- cheap people should stay home, anyway.
