Blast at chemical plant in northeast China kills 9

DAQING CITY, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least nine people were killed on late Wednesday evening when an explosion rocked a chemical plant in northeast China, state-run media reported on Thursday.

The explosion happened at around 10.10 p.m. local time at a three-story building at Fuxing Chemical Plant in Lamadian Town of Daqing City in Heilongjiang Province. A total of 14 people were inside the complex at the time of the blast.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said nine people were pronounced dead at the scene, while five others were able to escape the building themselves. The fire was extinguished by 4 a.m. local time, according to a Xinhua reporter at the scene.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, and an investigation has been launched.
