Buy Unlocked Iphone In Switzerland Or Uk - Good Deal?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to Switzerland and the UK next week - I'm taking my new MacBook Pro and an old Nokia. I have pre-pay SIMs for both counties just for calls, but I'm strongly tempted to buy an iPhone (synching contacts from the MacBook would save a lot of aggravation).

32GB iPhone 4 in Switzerland is CHF 899 = THB 30,300.

8GB iPhone 3G is CHF 629 = THB 21,200 ( and no micro-SIM issues)

Does this seem a good idea? Will it be possible to buy a reasonable deal for the phone from AIS or True when I get back to Thailand?

Iphone 4 is almost 100€ cheaper in Thailand with same warranty, legality an it is not locked.

OK, thanks for that info. Where to buy one in Chiang Mai - mostly they seem to be with a carrier deal.

Just go to the True shop and buy a Thai iPhone 4 from them. It's unlocked. And you don't need to sign up.

- You don't need to sign up for anything - if you buy the phone for the full price they don't even ask you if you want a True SIM card.

- It works with any SIM, world-wide

I think AIS and DTAC have the same deal but not sure, didn't check in a while.

I meet people all the time that went to buy an iPhone and invariably end up at a grey importer where they buy a locked/hacked phone for 1000 baht less than the official 1 year warrantied factory unlocked phone from True. This is a much worse deal. You have no warranty. The phone might re-lock with the next software update. It seems like most people don't even inform themselves - they just automatically assume that little shop on the corner must have a better deal than the official carriers in Thailand. Which is not the case. I told a friend of mine to just get it from True - but he went and got it off ebay, saved himself 2000 baht or so. The next month, he updated his phone software by accident (clicked Yes when iTunes popped the dialog) - and then he had an expensive iPod for the next 4 months until a new hack came out to unlock it again.

Oh yeah, where: Central Airport 3rd floor, True and DTAC have big shops there.

agree with DTAC Deals,

they are in bundles .. but they have also a non-contract option... this blows the price of the phone by about 2000 baht .. so its not really hurt ..

but on the other side ... iam envy everyone got a iphone including the bundle .. because the offerings they have are really good.

i pay almost double every month on standard promotions with iphone 3gs.

here some direct info from dtac: http://www.dtac.co.th/iphone/plan/index-en.html

i personally disagree with everything from true ... since the customer service, and quality of service itself is just terrible .. they seems just to bought the Orange network and never extend it ... everyone i know with true have serious trouble using it or dealing with customer service.

The iPhones sold in Switzerland appear to have different frequencies than the ones sold here. My iPhone4 from Switzerland cannot connect to True's 3G, it doesn't have the 850 MHz band, if I understand that correctly.

But if you use AIS, no problems.
