22 immigrants missing after boat capsizes off Spanish coast

2011-05-07 10:59:42 GMT+7 (ICT)

MOTRIL, SPAIN (BNO NEWS) -- Spanish maritime rescue services are looking for 22 would-be immigrants after their boat capsized off the southern coast of the country, the Spanish news agency EFE reported Friday.

There were 51 people originally from North Africa aboard the small boat when it nearly sank. The rescue operation began after receiving several calls from Morocco, warning of the departure of the vessel to the Spanish coast.

The missing include 19 men, one woman and two babies, while 29 have been rescued. The migrants rescued were transferred to the port of Motril in the southern province of Granada, where they were treated by the Spanish Red Cross.

Air and sea patrols continued looking for the immigrants, even in areas where sea currents and winds could have dragged the bodies. However, it was deemed unlikely that any of the missing immigrants had survived in the cold water. The seawater in the area is about sixteen or seventeen degrees, a temperature at which a person can survive an average of ten hours.

Although the number of migrants arriving in Spain has dropped considerably due to the country's economic crisis, many are still trying to enter Spain, the gateway to Europe. This incident is one of the most serious events during the past three years and brings to 24 the number of people killed so far in 2011.

No doubt Spain will mount an extensive search and rescue effort because Spain really, really cares about these people.

unfortunately, they do, and the bill for that action will again go into the millions.

the 6 old German submarines bought by Thailand would have been better used for sinking all these boats transporting illegal migrants

Did anyone notice the proportion of the would be assylum seekers who died - 19 men and 1 woman. I wonder whether it's usual to have such a proportion of men to women, perhaps it's down to cultural restrictions on women travelling alone in some parts of the world.

no, it is the usual thing.

the women are at home with the children.

once they got their foot in the door and get a permit to stay, they request for reunification of their family, i.e. the wife (or wives) and children then come legally and then they apply for welfare.

It pays quite well to have many children.

The OP tells us nothing about the ones who were rescued, maybe a case of women and children first.

Its obviously not the safest passage but puts your life at risk. It is more more a male thing to take such risks.

Maybe the whole traveling thing is more or less a natural male habit, an universal one and not only a cultural restriction in some parts of the world.

Take for example this forum and its members. according to a survey by TVF 90.9% are male and 9.1% are female.

Travelling to Thailand is not that dangerous compared with the boat trip in the OP. But still this board here doesn't have a 50-50 participation. cultural restrictions on women?

How can our gender studies expert explain this?

22 people died.

Its sad that the self declared knights of the imaginary superiority of the so called 'western civilization' using it for their xenophobic agenda.

We were packed in 150 in a boat designed for 60, says the boy. During the trip to Lampedusa, twelve girls were thrown into the sea Then I was transferred to Sicily, I escaped and took the train. Mais maintenant je n'ai plus d'argent alors, ce soir, je pars moi aussi par la plage.» Leur unique obsession: passer la frontière. But now I have no money, so tonight I'm going too the beach.

And you talk of comparing civilisations as if they're equal. :whistling:
