Get multiply tourist visas with extensions should give you 6 months you can apply in Hull, Cardiff, and Birmingham. All the other stuff play by ear after you get there.

I dont know about the Visa rules for a Brit, but im pretty sure you could get a "double entry" tourist visa, which would give you a total of 6 months (with extensions).

Regarding the cost of living, i have not noticed any wildly troublesome hikes in the past few years. Where i rent (in suburban BK) the rent has shown no sign of changing in the past 3 years. Certain things seem to have a fixed price according to what the locals are used to paying. Basic rents, street food, massages ect, seem to stay the same, although it may vary depending on the location.

Of course food and beer in the supermarkets has spiked a little, and expect to pay a lot more for everything if you are staying in the city and/or expat populated areas.

For example, in the part of BK where i rent the locals consider 5,000baht per month to be quite expensive for an appartment.

From all reports Chaing Mai is very economical and a great place to get a bit of everything LOS has to offer.

Check out Ian Forbes (one of TV's well respected and seasoned veteran posters) posts about life in and around Chaing Mai..and he's got some good pics too ;)

Hi there, welcome to the board,

I've been living in Thailand for 8 years just outside Pattaya in an area called Jomtien,

It's a beach resort with many tourists, expats retired or working here, the area offers all the comforts

of western living but with a thai climate. There are many western style supermarkets in close

proximity, even a Tescos.

It's not very busy but only a 10min drive to the busy resort of Pattaya.

Your rental budget should be enough for a studio apartment including swimming pool near the beach

for you and your wife, 15000bt - 20000bt per month equates to £300 - £400.

You can rent a small 125cc scooter for around 3000bt per month.

If you are both over 50yrs you can also qualify for a non immigrant O visa obtainable at a Thai consulate in the UK

a single entry costs £40 and will give you 90days stay upon arrival you can also extend this once in Thailand

at the immigration office in Jomtien for 1900bt and will get you a further 60 days.

Or a multi entry costs £100 will give you 90 days at a time, valid for a year, this means you will need to make a visa run

to the Cambodian border exit and re-enter same day service for 2000bt will get you another 90 days and so on.

Even if you get a Tourist Visa that will only allow you to stay for a max of 90 days but you will need to pay 1900bt at the

immigration office to extend it from 60 to 90days, then a visa run to the Cambodian border for 2000bt. to activate the next

60days and so on.

So if your staying longer than 3 months i recommend you get a non-imm O it will be less hassle once your here.

A 3 entry Tourist Visa will give almost 9 months with extensions.

We do not know his age so cannot say if he qualifies for a Non Imm Visa.

There is no such extension on a non immigrant O visa for UK travelers. Only if married to a Thai or having a Thai child would such an extension of stay be available.

sorry guys we are under 50 i am 44 and my wife is 40 dose this make it hard to stay plus looks like we can get a place to stay for a month for the a mount we have but would like a price range for what we can get cheaper to, as if we are close to the beach then a pool will never be used no no point in paying for it?

cheers guys

Ok so now we know your age then you'll need a double entry Tourist Visa so you can stay up to 6 months.

As for cheaper accommodation, you could get a studio slightly cheaper for around 12000bt per month if you book

it on a 6 month contract instead of a 3 month.

For even cheaper you can rent a room in a guest house for around 5000- 7000bt per month, these are basic furnished rooms without

kitchens and some only have communal bathrooms so depends if you want to eat out all the time or spend more on

a studio with cooking facilities.

I would estimate for two to eat out per day to spend min 1000bt but i assumed that you would want your own kitchen

as you enquired about supermarkets.

In the end it works out that what you would save on rent you would spend on eating out everyday, but you can

definitely live on the cheap here if you want, anything from £800per month to £1400 inclusive.

If you like Pattaya good, if you like a place on the beach, with not to many tourist around, and very inexpensive to live, please think about Cha-am, easy to get from here to Hua Hin and Bangkok, Cha-am is a place that in low season the most visitors are Thai, but there are more other people in high season

Posted

Yes i stayed in Chai am for a few days very nice beach but absolutely nothing to do in the evenings with no night life

and everything closes about 10pm. Couldn't stay more than a couple of days before i went on to Hua Hin but the beach there

wasn't that nice.

Thats why i ended up living in Jomtien has a bit of everything, but not OTT like Pattaya blink.gif

Double entry Tourist Visa means you'll get 60days upon arrival then pay immigration in Jomtien 1900bt to get another 30 days

after that you book a visa run with an agent for 2000bt inclusive to go to Cambodia in the same day and return with another 60 days,

then again the option to extend at immigration for 1900bt a further 30 days. Total days stay 180.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with Jomtien you'll find everything you want and more with a comfortable lifestyle.

How's about shedding a little more light on this proposed winter retreat,IE how much money you have to rent, where you want to rent and set up temporary home, will you only be eating Thai food or not, there are so many decisive factors to consider before anyone can give you any real info,do you want English television, and internet connection,do you drink and smoke, give us a clue, and some of us may be able to give you an idea.

Very good questions if I may say so. I'll give my details which may help the OP.

I live on Koh Samui not far from the beach (walking), have a one bedroom detatched house with aircon, cable tv (which I never use), my own internet connection and eat mostly Thai food which I cook at home. I do have a rather powerful computer which sucks more juice than my aircon, I smoke and drink too. My monthly outgoing is around 400 pounds a month.

Welcome. I'm disabled so it's a 20 minute walk to the beach but I imagine an able bodied person could do it in 10 or 12 minutes. Nice quiet area here too and very safe. Good size lounge and a porch out front. Local shop if you need a few bits and bobs and Tesco Lotus is around a 20 minute walk for me I guess. I tend not to use the supermarket much as I would rather support the local shops and there is a local food market 10 minutes walk (again for me) which sells fresh veg etc.

i am disabled to mate what price would we be looking that for rent?

thanks

paul

I pay 30,000 for 6 months up front but I'm a long term customer plus the owner is a friend of a very long term friend of mine who sadly died last year. I also provide free wifi service when the owners internet goes down so the local people don't get hacked off. I'd say I could get you maybe 40,000 for 6 months up front which equates to around 800 quid depending on the exchange rate at the time. I got another 2,500 of my rental contract just last week in fact. I said 30,000 and the ownner said no, I pulled 30,000 in crisp 1000 Baht notes out of my pocket and she (the owner) looked at the cash, then at me, then said OK. I've been living here on and off for 11 or 12 years and I know, cash talks.
