Strong, deep earthquake hits below China-Russia border region

2011-05-11 04:15:48 GMT+7 (ICT)

CHANGCHUN, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- A strong earthquake struck deep underneath the China-Russia border region on late Tuesday evening, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake at 11.26 p.m. local time (1526 GMT) was centered in China's Jilin Province, about 75 kilometers (46 miles) west-northwest of Vladivostok, Russia's largest port city on the Pacific Ocean. It struck about 560 kilometers (347 miles) deep, making it a deep earthquake, according to the China Earthquake Network Center.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from either China or Russia, and the depth of the earthquake suggests the impact to the region will be minimal if any.

On March 10, at least 26 people were killed and more than 300 others were injured when a moderate 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in China's Yunnan Province. That earthquake struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep.

Before that, on April 14, 2010, nearly 3,000 people were killed and more than 12,000 others were injured when a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck northwest China.
