ManU In Decline?

getting very nostalgic jjp.

remember the 70's at main rd when we had half the ground and all the seperated united and city was a rope used to go off all game.

Nev,

Maine Road! You're dreaming not being nostalgic if you think (1) you had half the ground let alone half the Kippax, and (2) i don't ever recall a rope being used (more like a big fence to keep you lot at the Kippax / Platt Lane open corner). But yes it used to kick off all over the Kippax as Reds did get tickets for the Kippx.

How about 'Who's up Mary Brown' for your list.

the game with the rope was the night game think around 73 finished 0-0 and yes there was a rope and we had half the ground that night, mad night,

game got held up.

been in the city side a few times standing in the open corner with hundreds of other reds, always fun at main rd.

Nev,

Sorry took me a while to check this out and get back to you.

Sorry mate but your recollection that back in the 60's and 70's, in the Kippax, when we played ManU, (a) your lot got half the Kippax and (:o the two sets of fans separated by a Rope, is only half right - (a) is wrong, (:D is correct. Read on.

I put to a Man City website and here’s the responses.

(a) half the Kippax - never. It was generally the section nearest to the Platt Lane - probably 25%.

(:D rope - definitely with a few police only. It was scrapping all night, charge and counter charge and huge surges. Unbelievable when you think of the segregation arrangements now.

They had a lot in the Kippax for almost the last game of the season in a crowd of only 43,000 in`71 (I think) when we lost 3-4. You could pay on the gate if I recall. Again a night of fighting all over the Kippax when na,na, na,na,na,na,na,na,na CITY rang out...

Subject: Derby Matches

Hi

I have memories of Derby Matches going back to 1969.

United were never allocated half of the Kippax in fact, apart from when the Kippax was segregated at the Platt Lane end by iron railings in the eighties, no-one was ever allocated any of the Kippax. Come on for Gods sake, the Kippax held 30,000 people at it pinnacle, who on earth is going to bring 15,000 and get them into the Kippax without segregation???

The nearest I ever saw to anyone having half was when Birmingham were promoted in 1973 and played at Maine Road first game of the season. About 3-4000 of them (It seemed like more with the noise they made) came round the back of the Kippax just before the gates opened at 1 o'clock, (They opened early in them days, and the whole lot of them got in and there was one almighty battle.) There were too many of them to shift or chase out so the police surrounded them and they stayed there until full time at which point, they were escorted unsuccessfully to the centre of Manchester where all along Lloyd Street, there were unconscious bodies all over the place from what had obviously gone before. I even saw one City fan pull a gun out that day (I'm not joking). I'll never forget it. I even remember that he was one of the characters around at that time and he came from Bolton. Nutter !! I remember asking him is it real and he said yes, as he loaded it with bullets. Thankfully, he never fired it but it put the wind up me, I can tell you. I was about 16 at the time.

United fans used to get tickets and infiltrate the Kippax and there were battles galore. In 1973, that sounds like the year that we beat them 4-0 in the league, in fact, I've just looked it up on Man City Stats and it was actually 3-0 with Colin Bell getting 2 and an own goal.

Yep, battles galore inside and out, and all the way back to town but half the Kippax, never.

Hope that answers your question.

Subject: DERBY MEMORIES

Hi Peter – I remember derbies in the late 70s where united had about ¼ of the Kippax at the Platt Lane end. There wasn’t much segregation because I have vivid memories of sitting in the Main Stand and watching blue surges into red and vice versa. I think there was more robust segregation at the top of the Kippax (iron gate), but towards the bottom there wasn’t much. All away fans had that end of the Kippax in those days

rgds,

Jon

At the moment you have one game in hand over us................................I count that game in hand as Chelsea at 'The Bridge'.......not immposible, but I think the deck is firmly stacked our way. Best of British anyway.

Lamps, is the game on TV in thailand tonight? I notice ESPN and Star have chosen sunderland blackburn and villa vs Fulham

Any ideas?

It will probably be on the other sports channel.the one that shows chelsea TV. There is nearly always a third match on there and hardly ever advertised.

See Bredblue not all city fans are bitter

I used to rate Simon Hatt...the writer of that article until i read that tosh. Personally i reckon he had nothing to write about before deadline so he had to make it attention catching.

I hope chelsea win it, they've been far and away the best team this season.

Yes you did tonk us. 3 goals in the first 20 minutes. Not taking anything away from you ofcourse, but as we can't even field a full strength first eleven right now our reserves had a strong resemblance to our Youth team. The result maybe not that strange then.

And no, i and most of england does not want to see ManU do it...you're the most hated team in the world remember!
