Dear Forum, My wife and I are planning a trip to Cambodia to see Ankor Wat and the Killing Fields. We will be travelling from Bangkok and I was wondering if anyone can advise the best way to get there and how I can apply for a visa (can these be bought at the border)? My wife is Thai so I'm not too sure if she needs a visa or not. Any tips you can give me to avoid being 'ripped' off would be great. Would anyone recommend booking a package deal from a travel shop in BKK who will arange it all for you?

Hi Beswick,

I did this trip 3 weeks ago, visa run.Air Asia Bkk-Phnom Penh, visa online,$20 or25,cant remember, saves having to queue at the airport on arrival for a visa, tuk tuk into PP about $6-7,tuk tuk for tour of Killing Fields,Tuol Sleng,Royal Palace should be about $15 for the day.Have fun,PP is a great city,im going back next week and to Siem Reap this time too.......

Assuming you are starting in Bangkok, the easiest way to go is to fly into Siem Reap.  Visa on arrival, about $25.  Although Siem Reap has lots of hotels, I would advise booking in advance and have them pick you up at the airport.  Hire a car with driver and a guide.  It used to be $20 per day for each.

Thai Passport does need a visa just like everyone else except for the border area.

Tourist visa on a arrival for $20, FLy air asia into Siem Rep and pay extra and choose a seat near the front of the plane so ur off first.

Check out agoda for best deals on Hotels. If u tell me ur price range i can suggest a few places to stay in both SR an dPP

Then take the bus down to PP ($6-9) 5 hours.

You can hire a tuk tuk, (a car will cost ya $35-40) in SR by the day for $15 and he will pick u up at 5 am so u get the sunrise at Angkor ( HIGHLY reccomended) and then with u all day and into the night. The park charges $20/day or $45 for 3 day pass.

Arrive after 4 pm and you get a sunset for free!!

PP will cost ya same for the day

DONT book a tour and when u go to Angkor buy a book from one of the kids. Also pick up a copy of the lonely planets guide to Cambodia for $5-7. Its a copy of course but....:-)

Check out my pics for Cambodia; Cambodia

Cambodia is a special place. Try to avoid Poipet if at all possible. Here is a good source for travel and hotel info http://www.canbypublications.com/phnompenh/pptransp.htm I would strongly reccomend visiting S-21(Toul sleng-secret prison made famous by the award winning film) and watching either the 10am or 3pm 1 hour documetry shown there called Bophana, then tour the grounds afterwords or hire a quide for 5-7$. There are many paintings on display by the famed artist Vann Nath who was one of only 7 prisoners to survive. He also has a gallery and restaraunt named after his wife, Kith Eng. He is usually at his gallery to meet and greet visitors but you will need an interpeter as he speaks no english. I spent an afternoon with him last week and a very special expereience. Google Vann Nath for much more info. (Out if respect for the dead I will not visit the killing feilds as it was sold to a private company who now profits from it. ):jap:

Yes, the second advice provided above about Thai nationals not needing ANY visa for travel to Cambodia is correct.

My wife and I made the trip last week from BKK via AirAsia... I did the EVisa online for $25, and my wife just showed her passport at the PP airport immigration and she was in... Nothing to pay, apply for or fill out, except the normal arrival card and a customs form.

If you look on the Cambodia MFA website linked above for the EVisa, there's a list of a half dozen or so SE Asian countries, including Thailand, whose nationals don't require any Cambodia visa for the standard 30 day tourist admission.

Yes...but other people look to these threads/posts for info on their upcoming travel...as I did...regardless of the date of the original post or the status of the person who first starts a thread.

There also was a mistaken post earlier in the thread saying Thai nationals need visas to enter Cambodia...when in fact they don't. That's certainly worth reinforcing.
