Yingluck ahead in Bangkok Poll

An opinion poll conducted by the Bangkok University has pointed out that nearly 27 percent of city voters plan to vote for Yingluck Shinawatra as the next prime minister.

Meanwhile, only 17 percent of the survey respondents plan to vote for caretaker PM Abhisit Vejjajiva to come back as premier.

According to an opinion poll conducted by the Research Institute of Bangkok University from May 20 to 22 on over a thousand Bangkok voters, 32 percent of the respondents will make their decision based on the candidates' past accomplishments.

Another 31 percent will make their choice

Only 17 percent die-hard fans will continue to vote for their favorite parties.

The poll result also shows that the most popular party for the party-list MP candidates is the Pheu Thai Party, which garnered 26 percent of the survey respondents' support.

The Democrat Party, came in second, with 15 percent.

Rak Thailand Party of the colorful Chuwit Kamolvisit came in third at 2.2 percent.

However, as many as 52 percent of the respondents are still undecided.

As for the most popular party of the constituency MP candidates, the Pheu Thai is also ahead in the poll with 26 percent followed by the Democrat Party with 15 percent.

Another 1.7 percent of survey respondents plan to vote for candidates from the Rak Thailand Party.

A whopping 52 percent is still undecided.

When asked who would they like to elect as the new prime minister, 27 percent of the respondents pointed to the Pheu Thai Party's Yingluck Shinawatra while only 17 percent preferred Abhisit Vejjajiva to continue being the premier.

The Rak Thailand Party's Chuwit Kamolvisit got 4 percent. 49 percent of the city voters are undecided.

When asked about their confidence in the Election Commission's ability to ensure free and fair election, 66 percent said that they have no or little confidence in the EC.

Meanwhile, 34 percent of the respondents said they are confident the EC would be able to ensure that the poll is fair and free of electoral law violations.

More than 92 per cent of Bangkok voters intend to cast their ballot although some 52 per cent say they are undecided on which party or candidate to pick, Bangkok Poll said in a survey released on Tuesday.

Pheu Thai candidate Yingluck Shinawatra is in the lead in the race for the position of prime minister with 26.9 per cent of support, followed by Democrat Abhisit Vejjajiva (17,4 per cent) and Rak Prathet Thai's Chuwit Kamolvisit (3.6 per cent).

Bangkok voters rank the Pheu Thai Party ahead of the Democrat Party with the popular rating of 25.8 per cent vs 14.7 per cent.

Asked about factors to help them form a decision on a candidate, voters said job track record (31.7 per cent), campaign platforms (31,2 per cent) and party's banner ( 16.6 per cent).

Yeah of course, assuming they speak the language and can read the poster, people should be able to identify them.

If you don't speak the language you can still watch out how man fingers they hold up to identify them. Will at least work for ballot no. 1-10.

These smaller parties probably don't campaign much with a party list travelling circus, but as constituency candidates and more local.

Bad news for the government & virtually no posting. Oh..must be tough facing the reality of the people's disdain for AV & the Dems. If PT can even go close to half of BKK constituency seats the election is all over & Nattawut & Jatuporn will be in the cabinet. That's gonna be mighty hard for the red bashers to swallow. A bit like accepting Kasit in the cabinet I suppose.

I think its not that it is "bad news" for the government, why here are no postings. It is simply lack of interests and knowledge about all these other parties, so it doesn't start to become a vivid debate here.

And don't forget, even its about the capital Bangkok, it is also pretty regional and local and not nationwide news.

Of the Bangkok constituencies, Constituency #28 will be interesting to watch and see if Mr. Happy Toilet, son of big toilet Chalerm, can get in. The other paper has him listed as a favorite to win the seat, but as who,me? says, the election isn't for awhile and he could end up flushing out.

As for the overall Bangkok poll, it's worthless when well over half are undecided.

If these 50% don't vote, the 26% that want vote for PTP will be actually 52% on election day, and the 15% for democrats - 30%.

The PAD would need an actual ballot paper "No Vote" to be considered to get a vote.

About 30-40% (guesstimate) don't bother voting in most elections. I can't imagine that most of them would be supporting the PAD.

Would maybe different if the poll had the option "I am not telling you for what i will vote because it is my business".

Not sure if that was a possible answer to chose or if there were only "undecided" to select in case one didn't want tell the interviewer the certain party he will vote for.

Still the number of people openly admit to support Abhisit and the Democrats are surprising low. (actually not that surprising low IMHO. Not for me, but some argue that he is the big folk hero and loved by the majority, thought I see nowhere evidence for it)

Polls in Thailand are always interesting in that they hardly ever show reliable figures. Still the UDD propaganda machine has been going full strength while official political parties has to restrain themselves. The playing field should be a bit more level with UDD leaders standing as PTP candidates. Now the same rules will apply.

Probably also the time to remind Bangkokians of the turbulent days March - May 2010. The UDD protests the last months only emphasized the other sides wrong-doing. Let's add their side with indiscriminate grenade attacks at non-red-shirts, maybe throw in some nice clips of burning tyres, torched building, pillaged shops and ATM's.

Not good for reconciliation, but PTP/UDD seems not interested anyway.

It reminds me of one the last free election before the coup. On the way back from the polling station, my gf noticed she had made a mistake, she thought the lady she has just voted for was Democrat when if fact she was TRT. I remember she was laughing when explaining to her sister the mistake she had just made. Her sister of course scolded her to be so careless but it wasn't really a big drama.

That was just before Sondhi started his hate propaganda. At first it was just "Picnic in the park", then it escalated, lies after lies (FYI, Sondhi has repeatedly been convicted for defamation) until half of Thailand hated the other half.

It's true Thaksin was not so popular with a large part of the Bangkok electorate, but there was no hate. The division of Thailand is the work of one man, and it's not Thaksin.

The good thing about Yingluck is it's difficult to hate her, so that's probably why Sondhi's hate campaign doesn't work on her.

I hope we can soon come back to the time when people could realize they have voted for the wrong candidate and just laugh about it. The True Thailand.

Absolutely agree. The culminating point of Sondhi's hate campaign was the witch hunt on Facebook where PAD and democrats opponents were "outed". It really reminded us of the darkest hours of Europe or the USA.
